    Rental Car Insurance

Is it true that you are always supposed to buy the insurance? I heard Credit Cards sometimes cover you. I have a Visa Chase Freedom.

Also how do you know if your car insurance covers you? Just call them? I have Progressive full coverage.

    Anyone know how this works?

depends on the credit card and the car insurance, and actually the vehicle rented too. My credit card covers me in a rental car, and up to a 12 foot moving van. Beyond that, I'm on my own. My car insurance does not have a rental car rider.

Best bet is to call your credit card/insurance company and ask

usually your auto insurance covers it anyway... in some cases homeowner's does too

i typically go by the rule of thumb "never buy the insurance"

Whenever I have rented for personal use I have declined the insurance. But here is an interesting article from CBS in regards to rental insurance. One of the things they say you should do is call your insurance agent to find out your exact coverage. One of the big issues is "loss of use" coverage. If for some reason you wreck the rental, they can charge you for their loss of use while repairs are made. Your insurance might not cover that so it would come out of your pocket.

    Re: Rental Car Insurance

Most full coverage plans cover rental car insurance. However they don't cover the gap coverage. Meaning your insurance will cover what the car is worth but not cover the difference between what the rental company still owes on the car. You will be responsible for the difference if you total the vehicle.

    Re: Rental Car Insurance

    TRUST ME....... GET THE INSURANCE...........

Especially if you have a deductible. The one time I didn't get it, my co driver totaled the car, driving through a flooded intersection in a thunderstorm. We split the deductible, but it went against my insurance for the next several years.

    Re: Rental Car Insurance

Always a good question for your agent thats why you have him.

and before CW hopes on here you can always call your fello fanatic Adam Gray!

I sold insurance for awhile this is what I told everyone. (Farm Bureau

There is rental car coverage for most companies. You have to have it on your insurance plan thou. if you have a accident the rental coverage will cover most of the cost of the rental car. Some companies have a limit per day for a rental.

If you are renting a car your liability almost always have that coverage and if you have comp and collision insurance will cover you depending on your who your company.

The catchy part is if you get an an accident with a rental. The coverage is there with your insurance but the rental company can charge you for loss of use. Those tricky sons of guns. And your company may not help you there.

This. Definitely check with your insurance agent first but chances are you are already covered and buying the insurance is simply a waste of your money.

I have checked with my State Farm agent; he says my insurance follows me as a driver.

I mostly go this way as well. Although I have paid for the insurance on a few occassions. The last one that comes to mind is when I rented a car to take a bunch of friends to Downtown Chicago. We were touring the city, in and out of spots and I didn't want to worry about dings and dents and possibly having to deal with my insurance company on any issues and my deductible. Of course, this was just for one day and was worth the extra $25.

Last time I rented, it was $33 for the insurance through the rental company. The guy tried to talk me into the insurance through them, "It'll save your deductible" Yeah, but I'm renting the car for 5 days, I'll basically hit my deductible by adding this insurance, so there is no use." One thing to think about, if you feel like you are getting harassed about something, it's usually a scam. I think of rental car insurance this way.

As others have said though, with the discount insurance out there now, you definitely want to make sure you are covered.

    Re: Rental Car Insurance

The best deal is if you can do personal rentals through the company you work for and have their insurance cover you. I totaled a rental car that way once and all I did was call the rental car company and told them where the car was towed. Never heard another thing about it.
