    Starters for Thursday night

Was listening to Cotlar on the way in, he had G-Mac on. They were going position by position...the starters for Thursday are...

    Petersen (point)
    Johnson (off-guard)
    Clark
    Brackins
    Thompson

Found it interesting that Wesley will be playing a lot of off-guard this year.

    -----

Ames, Ia. — The big recruiting pitch, complete with ego-stroking promises, never showed up at Bryan Petersen’s door.

“I was never promised anything,” Petersen said.

Petersen joined Iowa State’s basketball program as a recruited walk-on out of Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. He was expected to add depth at point guard.

At the Cyclones’ media day Monday, coach Greg McDermott tabbed Petersen the starter for Thursday’s exhibition opener against Dubuque.

“When we felt like we needed someone that could give us depth at that position, he’s the guy we identified,” McDermott said. “We were just fortunate, the way things turned out, that he’s here.”

Three guards with eligibility remaining — most valuable player Mike Taylor, Corey McIntosh and Dodie Dunson — are no longer on the team.

Petersen is now competing with freshmen Diante Garrett and Marcus Brister at point guard.

“We just need to have the courage to be patient with them,” McDermott said.

Recruited by Iowa Conference and NAIA schools as a senior at Clinton High School, Petersen knows that playing point guard in the Big 12 will be demanding.

“I expect it to be the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through in my life,” said Petersen, who was put on scholarship this season after Taylor was dismissed from the team over the summer.

The fact that there is competition at point guard is one sign the program is headed in the right direction in McDermott’s second season.

“We really have competition at every spot on our roster,” McDermott said. “That wasn’t the case a year ago. It was difficult to hold players accountable both in practice and on game night because we didn’t have depth on the bench where we could sit him for 4 to 5 minutes and let him think about what was going on on the floor.”

Wesley Johnson noticed the added depth as soon as practice started.

“I was making certain moves and people were staying with me,” Johnson said. “Last year, I could get around people. I thought, ‘OK, we have to actually play in practice now.’ It’s been fun but very competitive.”

Joining Petersen in the starting lineup Thursday are Johnson, who has been moved from power forward to second guard; senior Rahshon Clark at small forward; freshman Craig Brackins at power forward; and junior Alex Thompson at post.

Thompson is starting in place of Jiri Hubalek, who will miss this week’s two exhibition games because of a foot injury but could be back for the regular-season opener Nov. 9 against Winston-Salem State.

Hubalek, who spent a good share of last season in McDermott’s doghouse, is out of it now. He packs 245 pounds onto his 6-foot-11 frame, up 20 pounds from a season ago.

“His work ethic, his demeanor, his leadership, his personality on the floor have all improved tremendously,” McDermott said.

Depth in the front line gives McDermott the luxury of moving Johnson to second guard, his natural position. He’ll be a matchup problem for opponents on offense. Defense will be the challenge.

“He’ll have to defend quickness and speed,” McDermott said. “Last year he was defending size and strength in most cases.”

Brackins, a Top 25 national prospect last year, and freshman guard Lucca Staiger have been the most impressive newcomers under McDermott’s watchful eye.

Staiger was ruled ineligible for the season by the NCAA last week. The NCAA ruled that Staiger’s club team in Germany was professional. Iowa State will file an appeal this week.

“It tears my heart out that that kid might not be able to play,” McDermott said.

I didn't catch who the fourth was. Found it interesting that Wesley will be playing a lot of off-guard this year.

Well until/if we get Staiger back I'm guessing we won't have much choice but to play big since that is where all our depth is. And I wouldn't be surprised if Peterson starting is a short-term thing.

Wouldnt it be something if Petersen ended up being a top notch player? Guy came from out of nowhere type scenario.

B-ball Thursday, Football Saturday, Bball Sunday. This is going to be a busy weekend!

I can't wait to see what this team has, despite all the current "bad news."

    Re: Starters for Thursday night

You know, it may sound a little cheesy, but what if the team wore some kind of colored band (similar to the black remembrance bands) as a kind of small, silent protest to the unjust suspension of Staiger?? It at least would get the media and commentators talking about it.

I think it would be great if the crowd could get a "Free Lucca" chant going at the exhibition game at some point. It would be a nice show of solidarity with Lucca.

I thought Rahshon Clark got injured playing for the White Sox?

I really wish we had Taylor/Staiger/Jiri for the entire season. Depth AND talent...how refreshing!

Oh well, we'll be ok I suppose.

This might be sad, but that is still making me laugh from last night.

I must be easily amused these days....
