Vacationing: Seattle and Portland or Vancouver?

The wife and I just booked a flight to Seattle for a week without the kids and was wondering if any fellow Cyclonefanatics had any input on things to do in the area.

We want to check out Mt. Rainier and either drive to Portland or Vancouver (I'm leaning towards Vancouver), but was wondering what others experiences have been.

    Any suggestions?

Re: Vacationing: Seattle and Portland or Vancouver?

    I'm from Seattle.

Both are really cool cities, Vancouver is a bit shorter of a drive (but not by much).

Depends on what you like. Since you are going to Rainier, you might not be as interested in Mt. St helens, which is pretty cool to see (at least I thought so).

You could probably do an entire week in Seattle area alone even. What time of year are you coming (hopefully summer/early fall?) Depending on that, you could get some pretty decent skiing in. Whistler is great and about two hours north of Vancouver.

Re: Vacationing: Seattle and Portland or Vancouver?

We'll be there end of June/beginning of July...

It's been a while since we've been anywhere without the kids so we're used to going to zoos and family attractions, but we're probably more into outdoor activities and local favorites rather than the more touristy stuff. We'll probably take in the space needle and maybe a baseball game as well.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

    Seattle is great.

Do the fish market, queen anne hill. If you're driving up to Vancouver make a day of it and take the ferry over to Whidbey Island, lots of cool little towns, the wife liked coupeville. From there stop at Deception Pass, its a great view and some great hiking trails into the woods.

Hiram Chittenden Lock and Channel is kind of cool and the fisherman's terminal is near by which has a ton of "Deadliest Catch" type boats.

    Great town and area.

We were lucky enough to get a higher level room overlooking the marina/bay at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. Grouse Mtn views, harbor views, and the skyline to the right. The pic above doesn't do it justice.

I feel it was the best view in the city...rivals only summertime views of some other places I have stayed, Chicago, San fran., San Diego

When I visited this place, I had the feeling I had been there before. When we got to the bottom, I realized this is where Laura Palmer's body was dumped, and I was looking up at the Great Northern.
