Re: Econ Prof determines the 10 most overpaid players in the NBA

Junk. Kobe Bryant should only make 5 million a year? I think this guy simply had to add a couple "stars" to this list to make it controversial so people would read it.

He says wins drive revenue and not stars. True in most places but in LA? And doesn't Kobe help them to win? So I think the 25 million they spend on him is money well spent. They make much more on him than that.

Pretty sure the Lake Show wouldn't have the championships they have without Kobe... not sure if I agree with majority of his list

Here's what he has to say about Kobe:

    "Overpaid by: $19,693,258
    Salary: $25,244,493
    Value of Wins: $5,551,235

    Team: Los Angeles Lakers
    Minutes Played: 2,232
    Wins Produced: 2.85

Kobe Bryant is a basketball legend, and as such many people may bristle at his inclusion on this list. However, Berri contends that the player’s sterling reputation is something of a mirage. “The media says Kobe was one of the best players in the game in 2011-12,” he said “But the numbers tell a different story.”

According to Berri, Bryant’s scoring simply comes down to the fact that he takes a lot of shots. “But in contrast to past years, Kobe’s shooting efficiency was below average for a shooting guard, and inefficient shooting doesn’t produce wins,” he said. “However, if you take enough shots you can still score enough points to convince fans – and the media – that you are actually helping a team win.”

But doesn’t Bryant’s star power attract enough fans to help the team’s bottom line? No, according to Berri. “The study of gate revenue reveals that it is wins that drive revenue. Star power is far less important.”

The difference between a Kobe or Dirk and a lot of guys on that list is that you can't easily replace their value with a cheaper option. Also notice how outside of Deron Williams, the star players on the list were all signed to those contracts with it being known that they would probably decline from their prime while still under that contract. Big difference between that and severely overvaluing a role player like Lewis or Okur.

and just for the sake of clarity, he's not talking about past years performances. He's basing his list on the current season.

yeah, took me awhile to catch that...

Was going to question whether the Mavericks would have had any playoff shot without Dirk last year

This is what makes that article junk

    Overpaid by: $12,459,225
    Salary: $7,305,785
    Value of Wins: -$5,153,440
So Tyrus Thomas played for a bad team. They didn't win and b/c of that his value is NEGATIVE 5 million? Negative. So in other words Tyrus Thomas should be paying Michael Jordan to play on his team. It's a dumb article.

Joe Johnson got paid over 18 million this year to average 18 ppg, 3 rebounds, 3 assists. He's not overpaid?

That one would make more sense than some of these

Have you seen Tyrus Thomas play? He is one of the most limited PF in the game today. He is long and athletic and...... thats it. A good athlete doesn't make a good ball player. He needs great players to make him look like the player everyone mistook him for. Is that adding value?

But aren't the Laker's selling tons of Kobe merch? Kobe and Dirk seem like guys that are worth a lot to their teams without touching a basketball...

Yea, but if you take this guys list at face value, he'd become more valuable as you added good players around him, which doesn't really make sense.

We are arguing 2 different things. I don't think Thomas is very good at all. In fact I wouldn't want him on my team. BUT, he isn't worth NEGATIVE value. That's ridiculous. Hell even Brian Scalabrine makes 1.3 million a year.

His article would have been a lot more credible if he would have said, "Tyrus Thomas makes 7 million a year but his production is that of a guy who should be making 3.5 million a year."

That would have made sense and be probably. Paying some negative 5 million is dumb. By this guys' logic, every game on the Bobcats team should not have been paid a dollar.
