    Schedule Format

Playing FCS schools is just a fact of life anymore in CFB, especially with 9 conference games, my question is do you guys think its better to schedule that game as the first game of the year or do you prefer moving a few weeks later like this years WIU game?

Personally I'd rather play it as the first game, to keep things simple and not show too much for the Iowa game but I can see benefits like being able to rest guys heading into conference play. I don't like the idea of going 3 weeks in between playing FBS competition, doesn't seem like an ideal way to head into big 12 play.

I would rather play a FBS school such as Akron than a FCS. And if we are gonna play an FCS, make it Northern Iowa ONLY. Who cares about the other FCS schools?

    My teams: (as of 6/15/14)
    Cleveland Browns: 4-12 - .250
    Cleveland Indians: 34-35 - .493
    Cleveland Cavs: 33-49 - .402
    Iowa State Cyclones (FB): 3-9 - .250
    Iowa State Cyclones (BB): 28-8 - .778

In the perfect world, it would be played first and to be used similar to how exhibition games are. However, when scheduling, you cant always have it perfect as there are some many variables that go into it.

I agree, the UNI game makes sense but the other FCS schools don't. I'm afraid the reality is that the FCS games are going nowhere.

Costs a hell of a lot more to play an FBS than FCS, especially in the case of Akron vs UNI. UNI brings money in and takes less out than Akron. Easy choice.

Plus, we'd have to go back to Akron and play them in their house too. Yuck

UNI is a cash cow; purple hawks show up in droves to Ames. I wonder how South Dakota fans traveled to Minnesota and Wisconsin? They (and SoDak St.) might be other options?

SoDak St. and NDSU fans are pretty die-hard for FCS schools, and have lots of alumni closeby in Minnesota. They'd probably be options 2a and 2b after UNI in terms of attractive FCS opponents.

Variety? If we were locked into 9 Big 12 games + Iowa + UNI, we'd have the flexibility for only one unique opponent every year. Changing it up at least gives us one more.

Plus it's fun to play other regional schools like SDSU, NDSU, Western Illinois, etc.

Yeah, they'd probably be the best FCS alternatives for any year where UNI isn't on the schedule.

Honestly, I'd be fine with playing UNI every year. It might not be exciting, but it makes us money.

And it boosts attendance numbers, which is just as important as the money that attendance generates when it comes to public perception and getting support for the SEZ.

Not to mention it is fun as a college student to have a bunch of friends come from CF to Ames and tailgate and party.

    Re: Schedule Format

Is an akron or other bottom end FBS team really all that much better than a UNI or other upper end FCS teams? We've seen frequently the line is blurry between the top end of the FCS and low end of FBS, especially with plenty of programs getting 'promoted' in recent years as the NCAA relaxed its requirements on things like attendance minimums and lower conferences like the WAC needing teams to move up to backfill from realignment losses.
