    Re: Headed for Savannah, GA

My wife and I spent a week in Savannah and absolutely loved it. I was fresh out of college so we didn't really have the budget to do some of the more popular activities. One thing I wold recommend is a walking ghost tour - my wife was a huge fan of shows like "ghost hunters" and Savannah has a reputation for being one of the most haunted cities in the U.S.

I would highly recommend a civil war tour at one of the forts or even in the historic district. We didn't get the chance to do that, but our tour guides from our other tours that were Savannah natives had very "frank and honest" opinions when discussing Sherman's March - it was a very interesting experience getting civil war opinions from a "southern perspective"

Man, there's a ton to do. You don't even really need advice. Just go out and walk and you'll find it. Take a historical bus/trolley tour. Your hotel will show you where they pick up, or you can find them walking around. Pub crawls are amazing in Savannah. We went on a guided, "haunted" pub crawl, where the guide told us different grizzly stories that were supposed to have happened at different points along the way. The riverwalk is cool. Lots of little shops, bars, and eateries. Take a water taxi to the far side of the river. Go golfing.

Savannah is a ton of fun.

    Re: Headed for Savannah, GA

if remember correctly, the Westin is right in the middle of the Riverwalk. We stayed at the Mariott way down on the east end. Your location is better, imho.

    Couple more places:

Savannah Smiles dueling piano bar is a lot of fun. Fairly cheap drinks as well.

One Eyed Lizzies is a bar/restaurant with pretty good food as well.

The riverwalk is awsome! Make sure to grab a bear and just chill near the river.

My wife and i walked to each of the 24 square parks in the historic districts. One of them was filmed in the movie Forrest Gump (the infamous scenes where he was sitting on the bench). You can pay a bunch of money and do a trolley trip if you would like...but I'm cheap and we walked it.

Go to Paula Deans Restaurant. Make sure to get their early and get a reservation. That place will book up quickly, but it is awesome.

Here is the fun one...Do a ghost tour. They are an absolute blast! So much fun and 100 percent worth it.

One of the most beautiful places in all of Savannah is the Bonaventure Cemetary. It is amazing. Make sure to go into the building by the main doors and grab a map and brochure. Here is a link:

***Finally...this one was an absolute blast. Go to Tybee Island (which is minutes away). Fun times by the beach of the Atlantic! Also, don't forget that Hilton Head South Carolina is like 35 minutes away and is AWESOME!

Good choice, guy. One of my favorite places to visit. Sea Island is somewhere down there also. Go see a plantation also.

Spot on Wesley. They have beatiful plantations!

There is also a crocidile refugee site with many endangered animals just outside of town (on the way to Hilton Head).

Mainly...just walk around the historic district and enjoy the gorgeous architecture. I've been all over the world and Savannah, Ga is my favorite city. It is a cleaner version of New Orleans with being one of the 13 original colonies.

The pirates house is a really fun place to eat. The food is okay, but the place is a 250 year old pirate house! So cool.

If you go to Paula Deen's, don't get the buffet. I got the chicken pot pie, and was much happier than everyone in our group who got the buffet.

If you visit the cemetery, you'll notice that there are lots of tombstones that have just been piled up next to one of the buildings. Someone asked our guide about it, and we were told that during Sherman's march, when the union army occupied Savannah, they made camp in the cemetery. Once they were gone, the Savannah residents noticed that the soldiers had spent considerable time carving lewd drawings and phrases into the tombstones. So, instead of leaving them on display, the residents just piled them up and left them, and there they sit. I though it was kind of an interesting story.

    Re: Headed for Savannah, GA

You could try Tybee Island beach. The water is very warm and there are many dolphins in the area. The antiques are also pretty interesting there - southern furniture and civil war stuff. A pretty neat park is George L Smith - it is probably 66 miles west of Savannah. It has a large lake with cypress trees and spanish moss - you can canoe through it - seems a lot like Okefenokee. We lived in Swainsboro and made several trips to Savannah. Of course, St Patricks day is huge there.
