    Position recruiting

    Which positions and how many at each do you think we're targeting?

    I'd like to see everyone's lists in order of position importance and number of recruits we want to secure at those positions.*

    The "problem" with your request is, CPR has established a solid baseline of talent across the board. So, aside from a position or two (tight end) where it's a little thin, he just needs to bring in good players, and keep upgrading talent everywhere. So, really the list would be:

    1. Tight End (2-3)
    2-24. Everything Else.

    Seriously.

    Maybe he'll need a JC offensive tackle, but Lalk, Dagel and Dunning will have something to say about that this Fall.

    I agree, RB is important. We'll lose Woody and White after next year, and it would be nice to have some RS Freshman depth to replace them.


    If Bevins is slated for DT, and with Aka possibly growing out of DE (I know our coaches said something about him sticking at DE at 280), we could use a couple of DEs. We will be relying on this years true freshman to be in the 2-deeps next year, so getting 3-4 LB and LB/S types is important.

    And finally, a punter. We can redshirt him, and then get another the next year if he flops.

    We know this will be a smaller class. All these figures depend a lot on position changes and how this years freshmen look when they get to campus. Tight end is the main position I am worried about numbers.

    I would almost go with 3 LB's in this next class? 1 really good JUCO, and 2 freshmen.

    SR- Knott, Klein, Morton
    JR- George
    SO- Miller, CJ Morgan
    FR- Seeley, Pavlenko, White

    So next season, who are the starters? George, Miller, and Morgan? George, Miller, and White?

    I think a good JUCO that could potentially come in and start for a year or two would really help us out until the younger guys are ready to go.

    I still believe that we'll see Luke Knott starting at LB for us before he's done here. He's 6'1" and 195 lbs right now. He could easily get up to 225 lbs or more in a couple years.

    This is what we have now at each position on scholarship, with the number of seniors in parenthesis:

    QB: 4 (1)
    RB: 5 (0)
    WR: 12 (4)
    TE: 4 (2)
    OL: 16 (3)
    DE: 8 (2, 1 if Maggitt gets a 6th year)
    DT: 10 (4)
    LB: 9 (3)
    CB: 8 (1)
    S: 7 (1)
    K: 1 (0)
    P: 1 (0)
    Total: 85 (21, 20 if Maggitt gets a 6th year)

    In my opinion, these are the ideal numbers for each position:

    QB: 4
    RB: 5
    WR: 10
    TE: 4
    OL: 18
    DE: 8
    DT: 8
    LB: 10
    CB: 8
    S: 8
    K: 1
    P: 1
    Total: 85 (41 offense, 42 defense, 2 special teams)

    With all that in mind, these are what I see as needs this year:

    QB: 1
    RB: 1
    WR: 2
    TE: 2 (1 HS, 1 JC)
    OL: 5 (4 HS, 1 JC)
    DE: 2
    DT: 2 (1 HS, 1 JC)
    LB: 3 (2 HS, 1 JC)
    CB: 1
    S: 2
    K: 0
    P: 0
    Total: 21

    That gets us close to even with what I see as the ideal numbers. We would be +1 RB, but we need to take one just about every year and we didn't take one last year. To make up for it, we would be -1 LB, but we play only two guys there enough that we should be alright.

    I just want to add that when you really look at who's on the roster, both talent and numbers, this staff has done a phenomenal job fixing a mess. I don't know that our starters are much more talented than what we've had in the past, but the depth is FAR more talented than it used to be AND we're doing much better with player retention. Gone are the days of awarding a half dozen walk-ons with a scholarships every fall just to get closer to 85.

    How many ISU teams in history could have played the schedule we did last year, made a QB switch mid-season, had as many injuries as we did, and still gone to a bowl game? I would say not very many, and that was just CPR's third year. The depth that has been developed will help us win more consistently, which will help us get some of those next level recruits. The upsets are also a sign that the culture is changing.

    To add to this, that young depth will continue to develop and replace the existing starters. DMac had a huge issue with replacing outgoing seniors causing him to lean onthe JuCo crutch too often. CPR is developing home grown talent, especially on the lines.
