I State QB: run first or pass first?

What's the most important for Iowa State's quarterback, being a good runner or good passer? And should Iowa State be a run first team, or pass first? In my view, you win by having a quarterback who can get yards with his legs. And the run needs to be the first option like K State. Others opinions?

Not turn over the ball first. Then pass second.

Pass first, did you see how bad our offense was when JB couldn't complete anything in the bowl game? That said, they also have to be able move around.

Pass first. We'll never get more than a decent bowl game if we don't have a good passer, IMO.

    Pass First.

Did you notice how bad KSU's offensive production was last year?

We have 4 or 5 good running backs. Their job is to run the ball. Let them take the pounding.

Let the QB do the thinking and the passing.

Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?

Our offense is designed for a pass first QB who is a good enough runner to still run a read option and scramble every once in awhile.

Why even ask? Simply look at the YPA for either option. Says it all right there.

Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?

Pass for sure. We'll never go toe-to-toe athletically with the other teams in the Big 12. Passing and being fundamentally sound help level the playing field a little bit. Then if you win the turnover battle as well, you can win any game. I'm not saying don't run the ball, just that if we ran all the time we would struggle with being under-sized against the "big-boys"

We had 31 fumbles last season and lost 18 of them. K State had 23 and lost 9.

This is a pretty terrible philosophy. A number of run-first teams have higher YPA for their passing games because

    1) They don't do it as often, so
    2) When they do do it, it's unexpected, and
    3) Their running game sets up huge pass plays (often play-action) downfield

So that wouldn't be a good indicator. It's certainly nowhere near as simple as you claim it is or else everyone could be an offensive coordinator.

Our QB should be pass first. Our offense should be run first.
