    Lousy Ames/University Roads

    patches here . . patches there . . rumble strips . . . bumps . . .uneven surfaces . . UGLY gawd awful repairs . . . . One simple question . . WHY?

Ames pulls in a LOT of money every year.

The Iowa DOT has its HQ in Ames . . . and yet the roads have been awful for almost 40 years.

Furthermore, South Duff is getting very JUNKY. Eateries, Gas Stations, Car Shops etc are all piled on top of each other.

One would think city planners would take some pride in cleaning up the city.

One would also think the DOT could at least get Highway 30 up to STANDARD with what I see in Iowa City every time I drive through on I-80.

COME ON! Ames is one of our Keynote Cities in Iowa . . CLEAN up the place and quit letting everything run down to the point where is looks like some third rate junked out area in Detroit.

i disagree with this. It actually looks a lot better now that they've cleared out that crappy furniture store, warehouse, old strip club, junkyard, and rundown bowling alley. The Dollar Tree looks way better than the Salvation Army that used to be there.

The look of Duff has improved a lot. Whether or not all that construction will come back to bite if/when it floods again is another story.

Duff looks better, but that doesn't mean it's laid out very well or in a very attractive way.

Agree that Duff is looking better. Getting Kelly's out of there was a huge lift.

What role does IDOT have in maintaining Ames' roads?

That's a good question. Pretty sure decisions on Ames' roads are not their call.

Correct. Plus the I-DOT has no money to begin with, so even if they were responsible for Ames' roads, they would be very low on the totem pole.

My first question for you is...Are you for or against the gas tax increase?

Cant blame the dot for city streets. Most state and city budgets are down, which means less road repairs and improvements.

IDOT would have jurisdiction for any state or federal highways through town. I think Lincoln Way is considered Business 30 or was at one time and Duff is also a state highway from what I remember. So those two roads would be DOT.

    Yep. US 30 and 69.

Not sure if they are responsible for upkeep of those. I doubt it.

They are mainly involved with layouts. For example, I know they did the plans for the Grand expansion to South 16th. Don't know where the $ will eventually come from to build it, tho'.

    Re: Lousy Ames/University Roads

I don't have any major complaints about Ames roads, they're constantly working on them during the Summer it seems. If you have a specific complaint you should tell them, maybe it'll get fixed sooner.

And they just fixed or are fixing major stretches of Highway 30.

I'm pretty conservative but we do need some road money. However, if we go with a gas tax I hope we cut somewhere else to be tax neutral.

I agree that South Duff and Parts of Lincolnway need to be re-paved, but there is road construction happening all over the place right now, so its not like they're doing nothing. Highway 30 is being paved by Ames right now and there is a big project planned along Highway 30 in the southeast area of Ames with landscaping, glowing towers, and tree plantings. Also I-35 by Ames is going to be redone within the next few years with new (reconstructed) interchanges and new bridges over the Skunk. North Grand Mall is also going to be renovated with Kohls, TJ maxx, and more going in along with new parking lots and landscaping there. Those are some of the crappier looking areas and they are about to look a lot nicer. Be patient, improvements are on the way

****. I had no idea Kohls was coming to Ames. How do I keep my girlfriend from finding out there will be a Kohls store a mile from her house? My checking account would like to know.

If shes you're girlfriend, she shouldn't have any access to your bank account. If she does, that's your own fault...
