    D Day

A few pictures I took a couple of years back on a trip to Normandy. Great trip that I would highly recommend. Sorry about the quality, it was just a P&S.

Angoville Au Plain church-The pews still have blood stains.

"A church that two American Medics, Bob Wright and Ken Moore, who were with the 501st set up an aid station after landing in Normandy. Wright and Moore treated an estimated 82 men, including several Germans, in this church, and a wounded child. The area was unsecured for many hours and German patrols entered the church on at least two occasions, and Wright and Moore ordered them to leave their guns outside or to leave the church. Incredibly, the Germans did. Eventually, the area was secured and many of the wounded were evacuated, but two died in the church. Two days after D-Day, while medics were treating men, they heard a creak. A hidden door opened up and out came two German soldiers who'd been hiding in the church. They surrendered."

    Re: D Day

I'll have to post picture after I get home this evening. Was on a battlefield tour in June 1994 before the 50th anniversary with my dad. Have a picture of my old man, sister and me by the Utah Beach sign where my dad landed in 1944. Dad was a medic with Battery B of the 980th Field Artillery Battalion. They were the first heavy artillery to land on June 11th.

Did a Google today on the 980th and found an excerpt from the unit history that read:

"By the (July) 27th the bn found it necessary to look for new positions to support the VII corps. attack. Before the reconnaissance parties left in the early morning of the 28th, at 0300B, btry "B & C" positions were bombed with "bread basket" type anti-personnel bombs with a total of ten casualties. Corp. Carmen J Tufo, Btry "B" was killed and three men were hospitalized. The remaining six were treated at the bn aid station and then returned to duty with their btrys."

That little excerpt hit home for me since my dad was awarded a Bronze Star for evacuating (under fire) those wounded in that attack. Wish I had found this stuff when my father was still alive.

Definitely a bucket list item for me. Cannot grasp the magnitude of what the Allied soldiers did until physically being there at Normandy, I'm sure.
Cannot thank those enought that served during that time. Thanks for posting.

Awesome photos. I've always been fascinated with WWII and plan on visiting Normandy someday.

Also, BoxsterCy, that's a killer mustache.
