Cubs Top Pick Playing Hard to Get

The No. 6 pick in the draft is slotted at $3.25 million under the new Major League Baseball draft rules, but Cubs' first-round pick Albert Almora appears to be looking for more.
"My main priority now is college," Almora said Tuesday. "I just graduated high school and I have a full scholarship to the University of Miami, and that's all I'm looking forward to right now."
Almora is being advised by super-agent Scott Boras, who is trying to get his client the most money possible, using college as leverage. The Cubs have a bonus pool of $7,933,900 for their 12 picks in the first 10 rounds, but teams can spread their money around and still stay below the total budget.
It figures to be a difficult signing for Cubs President Theo Epstein, who was looking for an impact player, but now has to deal with an impact agent with a history of playing hardball.
Almora said he's "sure" he's ready to play in the majors.
"But we'll have to see what happens when it's time (to talk contract)," he said. "I'm ready to play in the major leagues. In my mind right now, I trust my opinions and I know what I can do on the field. That's not the priority right now. The priority right now is we have to let the process play out and let the cards fall where they have to fall.

Boras gets what he can get for his clients but his clients almost always sign. If this ******* wants to turn down 3 millions dollars in the hopes that in three years he can go back into the draft with less leverage and hope to get drafted higher than #6...well good luck to him.

An "impact" player? He won't sniff the majors for 3-5 years. Two years at a minimum if he turns out to be a stud. Hopefully Theo and the bunch can turn the Cubs' luck around concerning their ability to produce position players from the minors.

I approve of people playing hardball when they haven't proven anything yet.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

He'll sign, this is just a negotiating tactic by Boras to get him more money. It happens with pretty much every draft pick that has a strong college commitment.

Re: Cubs Top Pick Playing Hard to Get

It will be interesting to see how situations like this play out under the new draft rules. Slot for the #6 pick is $3.25m and the Cubs could go over slot if they want but then they'd have less money to sign the rest of their picks. According to that article, the Cubs have a bonus pool of just a shade under $8m to sign their 12 picks from the first 10 rounds.

and then you have AJ Burnett, Jaret Wright, Kei Igawa, Hideki Irabu, Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, Jason Giambi, Kyle Farnsworth, the guy who stopped in the middle of his windup who wasn't named Chien Ming Wang, Roger Clemons, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixiera, Javier Vasquez, Gary Sheffield, Kevin Brown, Freddy Garcia, and a slew of other awfully overpaid signings.

*Note: Jeter is super overpaid as was Posada those last few years.
