    Big 8 question

How was scheduling set up during the old Big 8 days? This was prior to my ISU fandom....

Not sure what you mean with this question, since there was only one way it could be scheduled:

Football, seven conference games, home game against each team every other year.

Basketball, fourteen conference games, one home, one away.

In football? Played everybody every year. Four home and three road or vice versa. Iowa State often played Oklahoma and Nebraska back-to-back weeks.

And there were only 11 total FB games before the early 2000's, so you had 4 non-conference games.

So you had 7 conference games, the Iowa game, and 3 other non-conf.

    Thanks.

I wish that we could go back to the old Big 8.

There was also an exemption for teams that had to travel to play Hawaii. They were allowed to play a 12th game.

That exemption is still in place. Teams are allowed a 13th game if they play at Hawaii.

    Check out 1971.

Played CU and then OU and NE on consecutive weekends.

Final AP Poll: NE #1, OU #2 and CU #3.

How's that for a tough conference schedule?

Two interesting things jumped out at me from our early, early days:

    1) From 1895 through 1915, we played Minnesota 17 times; all road games, and all losses. We were outscored 410 to 20, including 14 shutouts. Ouch.

    2) In 1895, the year before the Big Ten was formed (then known as the Western Conference), 5 of our 7 games were against future Big Ten teams, including 4 of its 7 charter members. Is this just a coincidence, or were we being considered as a potential member?
