ISU student drops out of engineering, opts for culinary school. Wonders why no $$$$

I guess the article is supposed to make us question the role of private lenders subsidizing the ever increasing cost of higher education. But come on, dude. You dropped out of a top tier engineering school to get a culinary degree, and then wonder why you are earning only $10/hr?

The bubble in higher education isn't all that different from other pricing bubbles of recent years. We've spent an entire generation convincing kids in high school that everyone needs to go to college after their HS senior year, which increases the demand for degrees while diminishing their value. The schools of course, are happy to cash the checks.

It is nonsensical for people to spend $20,000 a year at college before they know what they want to do. Particularly when they want to complain about it after signing for all the borrowed money.

Maybe I am just getting to be an old fuddy duddy. But I don't believe it should come as a shock that someone who goes to a culinary school advertised on late night cable TV eventually finds out there may be limited income potential from it. That goes for the "art schools" where admission is dependent on how well you can copy a cartoon turtle or bear with a hat!

Yahoo misses the point of the story entirely. The student took out bad loans on a deal that was likely never going to be a financial win for him. It's a cautionary tale. But what are we supposed to be mad at here? That he was able to borrow money to follow his dream and now is unable to pay it back?

It's a sad story, but it's one of those where we're supposed to feel sorry for someone who brought the struggles upon himself.

What did he expect to happen to his debt when he stopped paying? The reason he was "demolished" was that he got injured and is now disabled.

I stopped to be amazed to read/hear when people take tons of students loans without thinking of potential earnings they can get. Plus the key is "potential". There's no guarantee they'd get it.

You should never, ever, ever be able to discharge student loans through bankruptcy.

And with the financial sense he's shown, I'm going to go ahead and assume he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about when he says he wasn't told the truth about his loans. The paperwork isn't that hard to sit down and read over quickly. If you're going to make a big boy decision to take money (and a ton of it to get a rather worthless degree) you better be ready for the big boy consequences.

this brings up another point. Parents, don't co_sign loans for your kids if they are idiots!

Who falls for one of those ads on T.V? C'mon man.

Hilton Coliseum was specifically built to hold in sound with a solid concrete structure, steel doors, and a crowd that sits just a few feet from the court. With a fan base that frequently ranks among the nations largest crowds, players from opposing teams, as well as Iowa State, have said that the floor has shaken due to the loudness of the crowd

Why do you need a culinary degree to flip burgers?

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

I'm curious. Is that something you look for on a resume when people apply for a job at McDonald's?

The article title should be "Man leaves opportunity of high paying career to pay $60K for 15 month culinary program, mad he is an idiot"

If the person has a resume they are overqualified.
