Re: I was just placed in Welch... (Incoming freshman)

I forgot to mention that Welch is pretty close to Seasons. I ate there a lot my freshmen year. Convos is close now too. The courtyard is nice and you can take the scenic route to the MU.

Go with it. Part of the fun as a freshman is getting out of your comfort zone and meeting some new people. Relax, and try and have some fun. Don't lose focus on your studies though.

Just got done living in Welch 2 years and I will say most of this is not true. Welch is probably 70% freshman and there is a CA on every floor. With that said, Welch is not a bad place to live. Also, if you have to go so far I would just use a bike some of the time. Also, I think the rooms are generally bigger than the ones at MWL.

Not sure switching will be easy given record enrollment expected and no new places to live. It will probably take several weeks into the semester before they allow people to switch. People were placed in temp housing (dorm common rooms ie. Dens) last year IIRC. They don't let other residents switch rooms until all those students have actual rooms to live in.

Not sure if there is a way to change room assignment before getting to campus but if there is I would recommend it for an engineer.
I got a giant sized postcard in the mail today, (I'm sure everyone else living on campus has or will receive the same postcard). For anyone that hasn't received it yet, it does give instructions on what to do if you want to change rooms:

Want to change rooms? You can use A+ to view and select available vacancies Thursdays-Sundays June 1st through July 15th. What's available changes every week. Please note: If you are in a Residential Learning community, you may need to call us prior to changing your assignment.
I'm hoping to change floors of the building I'm currently living in for the fall.

Alright thanks guys. You all reply pretty quick lol. I think I'll try it out for a semester and see how it goes. I heard CyRide was pretty good at getting people places. If not, I can always ride a bike.

What's the best way to meet girls if they're not in your dorm at isu? clubs and community events? And how much better is state gym than lied? I'll probably be going to lied since it's closer.

After the semester a lot of people drop out so you can sometimes pick and choose after that, but I recommend giving it a shot. I can also ask my buddy what he thought of it (though I'm pretty sure he liked it) if you want.
Also, here is where this guy is wrong again. Welch is one of the closest dorms to campus and is also very close to the mu. If you were a business student you couldn't be any closer to classes.

I lived in Lyon my freshman year, which is pretty close to Welch... I thought it was great. I think the floors in the area are generally very close groups of friends. Being closer to Hilton and Jack Trice is also nice, and having quick access to the MU, Conversations, and Seasons offers some variety for meals. And FYI I'm a Pre-Biz major and while being so close to Gerdin would seem great, I had most of my classes on the opposite side of campus... Gen Eds like others have stated above. Anyways, enjoy your first year at ISU!

Stay away from State Gym. It's absolutely horrible. No one should ever use it. Ever.

State's awesome since it's brand new. You can still do stuff at lied though. The turf there is fun to play soccer on if you're into that.

Re: I was just placed in Welch... (Incoming freshman)

I lived in Welch freshman year majoring in Engineering. Sure, the walk could have been shorter, but I had a blast there. I'd recommend keeping the room and making the best of it. The advice earlier in the topic about "it will be as good as you make it to be" or whatever was 100% true.

I use to go to Lied every weekend and state gym I go to 3-4 times a week.

It depends on what you are going to do. Here are advantages of each imo.

Lied- Turf, meaning that you can play football or soccer (this is what I did with my group of friends, if you are a soccer guy, we play friday-sunday).

Weights are on 3rd floor, they aren't bad but was crowded when I went. Haven't lifted there since State reopened so idk what it's like now.

Basketball courts are tiny. I know the basketball players go upstairs to State to shoot so if you were looking for full-court basketball. I recommend State.

    Now State Gym-

Running, the track is not as crowded at Lied.

Weights- there's more weights. Lower level is the heavier equipment and upstairs is for running equipment, sit-ups, pull-ups, legs, rowing, etc.

Rock-climbing wall- I believe there is one at Lied as well so don't think it matters.

Full-court basketball courts at State upstairs and downstairs.

To summarize, Lied is where you can play football, frisbee, soccer, etc. State is better for running, working out, and playing basketball or volleyball.

State gym is really really nice because it's newer. Lied is good too. I go to Lied more often because it's closer for me. If you're looking to lift weights, it's kind of a toss up. Obviously State gym has newer equipment, but Lied is more than adequate.
