    AC Unit Advice

AC Unit goes out last night and the repair man comes by at 9:30 recharges the unit for $400 and makes the following recommendation for new parts:

    Lennox 14 ACS – 060 - 230 Condensor
    Lennox – CH33 – 0/60 OC 2F Evaporator
    Cost: $3975
Will improve my system from 10 SEER to 14 SEER

Also, recommends replacing the Gas Furnace, which he estimates has 5-years remaining, but doing it in combo with above will save $700 vs doing it separate.

    What do you all think?

That sounds really high, but I haven't ever bought a new central air.

Just replaced my last year. It was a 14 SEER Lennox unit. Was right around $4k

I installed a new 14 SEER one year ago for less than the parts to keep your used unit. Summer is not the best time to repair or replace but you can do better.

    Re: AC Unit Advice

Here's what I got for $9500 two years ago:

    TempStar TX 5400 14 SEER two-stage A/C units (1 @ 2.5 ton, 1 @ 3.0 ton), R410A refrigerant, Copeland scroll compressor, new pads

TempStar VS 80 75,000 BTU 80% efficient two-stage natural gas furnace, emergency drain pan, emergency float switch (x2)

Honeywell FocusPRO TH5000 digital thermostat (x2)

Complete installation (excl wiring and refrigerant lines that were installed when home was built) and warranties out the wazoo (10 yrs compressor, 25 yrs heat exchanger, 7 yr 'no hassle', 5 yrs parts, etc.)

This system is amazing; quiet, efficient (lowered both my nat gas and electric bills), and really well-built (and made in the USA! TempStar is a business unit of United Technologies).
For the record, the above replaced the original contractor-grade (read: crap) Lennox systems installed when the home was constructed. As far as I'm concerned, Lennox is garbage and I wouldn't have it in a dwelling I owned. YMMV.

    This space for rent!

That does seem high.I just replaced my A coil and outside unit with a 3.5 ton 14 SEER for $2150. I had two other bids for $2500. I got a Rheem Classic 42. My furnace is still ticking so I left it alone

    Re: AC Unit Advice

I believe there is a pretty good tax or energy company rebate if you go up to a 16 seer. Could offset the cost of a 14 and would be more efficient. Might be worth investigating.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not dude?

Mid American was $100 for 14 and $200 for 16. Thanks for reminding me that I need to apply for mine.
