If we just expand to 12...best guess at divisional alignments.

1 Texas 2 Florida State 3 West Virginia 4 Baylor 5 Clemson 6 Texas Tech

1 Oklahoma 2 Oklahoma State 3 TCU 4 Kansas 5 Kansas State 6 Iowa State

Match numbers for cross-divisional rivalries that matchup every year. The bigger question becomes...8 or 9 game conference schedule...seems like 8 would be beneficial to most teams, so hoping that's the direction we end up going. I think a key here is that splitting Okie and Texas, while preserving their rivalry matchup, gives the league balance AND reassures the ACC newcomers they won't be doing a lot of travel to the "northern" states....while also keeping some nearby matchups happening every season with their regular rivals.

Texas & Oklahoma will never be in separate divisions.

the texas and oklahoma schools are going to be in the same division without a doubt

I'd take that, but I don't think that provides very good balance to the league.

I thought about that Cloneice, but then realized I'd have to either remove TCU...which is worth a road trip to Texas every year (essential to recruiting)...or breaking up KSU and KU...which seemed a stretch.

Oklahoma and Texas ALWAYS want to play each other....but I haven't read that they explicitly require being in the same division. Have they said this directly somewhere?

As long as UT\OU have to be in the same division the balance is always going to be a bit off.

If the conference schedule is still 9 games though, i dont think you have to worry about balance as much as with an 8 game schedule, as every team would only miss 2 teams in the other division each year.

Here's the best Plan B I could come up with:

1 Oklahoma State 2 Florida State 3 West Virginia 4 Baylor 5 Clemson 6 Kansas

1 Oklahoma 2 Texas 3 TCU 4 Iowa State 5 Texas Tech 6 Kansas State

In hindsight, I think I like Plan B better than my original...locks Texas into playing their key rivals...TT, OU, FSU...puts OKIE and Texas together but balances that out with Clemson/FSU/West Virginia/OSU...and lets Iowa State guarantee at least 2 games every year IN the state of Texas. And I look forward to a championship game of Kansas vs Kansas State...ugh!

Re: If we just expand to 12...best guess at divisional alignments.

I bet us, Kansas, and Purple Kansas are the only ones that don't want to see the return of the old South Division. The new schools will want an easier path to the Big XII title game and Texas and Oklahoma want their in state rivalries in tact. The only way it could possibly be different is, as the OP suggests, there were protected rivalries. I think it would look more like this, though.

    North-ish

    1. Oklahoma
    2. Oklahoma State
    3. Kansas
    4. Kansas State
    5. Iowa State
    6. West Virginia

    South-ish

    1. Texas
    2. Texas Tech
    3. Baylor
    4. TCU
    5. Florida State
    6. Clemson

I don't think we'll go back to an 8 game conference schedule. The TV money is the reason. People want to watch conference games, not Oklahoma vs. Idaho. Having 9 conference games is worth more money to both the schools and television

I think that breakdown would ruin ISU's recruiting in Texas...I think we MUST have at least one, if not two, Texas teams in our division...or at least a locked in cross divisional rival in Texas, if we want to keep recruiting Texas as we have. I would hope our Prez and AD would fight that kind of a setup tooth and nail.

I don't see why OU and Texas would have to be in the same division as long as they still were able to play each other every year?

You could keep some rivalries even though they might still be in different divisions.

They don't want to play twice a year. To them it dilutes the value of the Red River Rivalry game if it can happen twice in a year (Big 12 Championship).
