Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Geovany Soto among likeliest Cubs to be moved

Officials from other teams say they had a list that ran 12 deep of players the Cubs made available at the winter meetings in December, including, obviously, those who have since been traded (Sean Marshall, Zambrano, Andrew Cashner, Marlon Byrd, Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu).
Alfonso Soriano, Matt Garza, Randy Wells, Carlos Marmol, Jeff Baker and Blake DeWitt also made the list.

All of those and more could wind up in trade talks within weeks. It would take an exceptional offer, however, to get Garza, who’s more likely an extension candidate barring a blow-them-away package of prospects.

For now, the likeliest players to be moved by the worst team in the majors once the early-bird sale sign goes up:

If those guys are the ones to be moved, then you can move the whole team.

This smells like the Royals and Pirates of years past. Team going nowhere dumping its salaries with no one left on the bench worthy to watch. Seems like even the Pirates and Royals have more talent this year.

How could Marmol be likely? Somebody would have to want the heart attacks to take him.

I'd almost say take Lahair trade him while his value is high, get some prospects. Then call up Rizzo who has 16 homeruns, 43 rbis and is batting like .330 in AAA.

I disagree. You have to move lahair to left, rizzo to first, jackson in center, and vitters at third. its time to give the young guys a chance. stewart has been a joke. soriano, a joke. we can move campana to right, cause frankly, dejesus has been very average, and campana wants in on every play.

if we can someone to talk randy wells, carlos marmol, and soto... the only bigger miracle was if we could unload soriano. soto has been terrible since his rookie year. marmol cant be used unless we are up five. and the waiting game on wells is up, he can take a hike.

Re: Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Geovany Soto among likeliest Cubs to be moved

Someone will want Dempster and Marmol for sure. Dempster could bring some good pieces back from a contender and people are always looking for hard throwing bullpen guys. I think Marmol is another example of a pitcher who excelled under Rothschild and now is struggling because their last pitching coaches aren't even close to being as good as Larry was.

Soto can be moved because he's solid behind the plate and has showed flashes so someone will want to take a flier on him just like Marmol. I do agree, let the young kids play and work out their kinks because they aren't winning w/ the roster now.

Whoever said DeJesus is average is just wrong. The guy can hit and plays an excellent outfield. Best leadoff hitter the Cubs have had since Kenny Lofton for half a season and better than anyone another ten years before that.

Re: Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Geovany Soto among likeliest Cubs to be moved

I think Dempster gets traded for sure. Starting pitching is always in demand and he's old enough he doesn't fit into long range plans for the Cubs so better to get something now for him than let him walk for nothing at the end of the season. Marmol's contract and poor performance likely will make him a tough trade and Soto's latest injury and terrible start may not net much back for him either. Should have traded those 2 guys in the offseason when they still had some value.

I think the best move would be to deal LaHair now. He's peaked and already starting to trend down. There's a reason he spent something like 10 years in the minors. Jackson still needs more time, strikes out WAY too much and Vitters is making decent contact, but has zero pop. Might as well hold out Rizzo a few more weeks to get the extra year of control.

As for the possible trades, I wouldn't be surprised if EVERYONE is available for the right price, even Castro.

I think the least likely to get traded are Castro and Garza just because the Cubs will want a boatload of talent back for either and doubt there is a team willing to pay the asking price. I'm torn on LaHair, I doubt even with his hot start he brings much back in a trade so why not keep playing him every day and see if he can play. He's easy on the payroll.

And I agree about the young guys, bring them up when they are ready and it makes the most sense. Rizzo alone is not going to turn this team's fortunes overnight so might as well keep him down long enough to keep that extra year of control. Leaving him in AAA right now is not going to hurt him, will just give him more seasoning and confidence to be ready for the callup to Chicago when that happens.

I think the difference is that, once the old bad contracts are shed, the Cubs will actually have the money to retain young talent.

The Royals, Pirates, and Marlins would always have good young players and then trade them because they couldn't resign them.

The Cubs are trying to get rid of players who are not part of the future and could net any kind of prospects to build for the future.

This overhaul will not be instantaneous. It will take time to develop young players and get rid of overpriced underperforming veterans.

Theo Epstien isn't stupid. I don't think there is any way he brings up Rizzo until it is ensured that they retain the extra year of control.

Hendry was an idiot and called up Castro too soon. That mistake will cost the Cubs about 7 million dollars with the earlier arbitration.
