    Installing a new A/C unit

First, does anyone know any affordable companies that you would recommend for installing a new A/C unit in the Iowa City area?
Second, what does it cost to install a new 2-ton unit? I'm looking for a basic unit since it will be going in to a rental unit.

    I appreciate any help.

If all your doing is switching out the outside unit, it's not gonna be all that bad. They can put a filter on your existing line set and reuse it as long as it uses the same gas. I don't know of any eastern IA companies, but I don't see it costing ya more than 1500 bucks installed. (A basic 13 seer Goodman runs around $1000.) The expense is gonna come in if the outside electrical needs brought up to code, the evaporator coil is shot, or you need to run a new line set.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not dude?

Re: Installing a new A/C unit

Chances are they are going to sell you 410A condensor (outside unit). Stop reading if you already had 410A.

If they install a 410A condensor they will need to install new linesets and change out the evap coil. The oils do not mix and an older R22 coil is not up to specs to hold the higher pressures of 410A.

You can ask to have a R22 system installed.

If I were in the same shoes as you I would go for a 410A system. The rising cost of R22 due to the phase out and the limited supply would not sit well with me 5 years down the road.

    Good luck with your decision!

EDIT: 6 months ago I could purchase a tank of R22 for $240 from my local HVAC wholesale place. Today the same tank is now $350+ at the same place. Last year contractors charged an average price of $25 per pound of R22... Today the cost has doubled.

Try Doug Beaver out of North Liberty (Beaver Heating and Air Conditioning (gotta love the name)) 319.331.5848.

I have had excellent service from him in the past.
