I do think Kirby deserves more respect for his abilities. But, the rest of it is respectable. I'll give him some slack for misevaluating punters.

Is Lockett really that good of a kick returner? I thought sure Justin Gilbert would top that list considering he is by far the most dangerous return man in the conference.

Actually, just taking a quick look at the stats, he's got the 3rd highest average and had the most punts for 2011. What that doesn't take into account is how many times he pinned teams inside the 20. At best, I'd probably place him 3rd team. But then again, I don't get paid to make the evaluations.

Wow. Bold words given what Tavon Austin did last year. I guess we'll see.

    Re: Phil Steele's All-Big 12 Teams

With punter stats the two most telling attributes can often be fighting against each other and like many other areas of football stats there are 1,000 other variables that come in to play.

Punters are most often evaluated on average punt and punts inside the 20...I've always thought that punters should be judged on the % of field they cover with a punt to find the best of both worlds. If a punter is always kicking from the inside the 50 they'll never be able to have a "booming" average. If they are always kicking from their own goal line they can't pin too many teams deep.

It would be interesting to track it as punt distance / available punt yards for a season.

If we had a rational basis for how we viewed these things, then we would be going for it on 4th down almost every time like that high school team in Arkansas.

    Re: Phil Steele's All-Big 12 Teams

Personally I'm psyched to see Farniok get 4th team going into his RS soph year. Pretty awesome for him to see him get some recognition after a really solid frosh season.

A little surprised by Hammer being on there.
