Is Chuck Neinas the Godfather of college athletics?

Institutions such as Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville and Cincinnati, Neinas said, could find themselves struggling to gain influence because of the uncertainty over realignment — and possible impacts to the Bowl Championship Series.
"They could find themselves on the outside because no one knows for sure what form conferences will have to take," Neinas said.
The current BCS structure is set to expire after the 2014 season and, as a result, new ideas about how major college football determines a national champion are about to be brought up, he said.
"There are lot more unanswered questions right now and it is difficult for anyone to know how it will turn out," Neinas said.
But, as in the past, Neinas is going to have a role in it.

Big 12 names Neinas interim commissioner €“ USATODAY.com

Is Chuck Neinas the Godfather of college athletics? Look what has occured after he's became the interim commissioner of the BIG 12 since the end of September (8 months).

brought a dysfunctional membership together after the big 12 fired the inept dan beebe.

The Big 12 members agreed to share First and Second Tier TV revenue equally.

The addition of West Virginia and TCU as the 9th and 10th members.

Helped negotiate Big 12's television deal with Fox would go from $19.5 million annually to somewhere between $60-70 million annually. A 350 percent raise in television revenue.

Big 12 agrees to a 1.3 billion extension with ESPN, combined with the fox deal would payout an average of 20.6 million for each conference member.

Big 12 hires respected Stanford (formally UofI) athletics director Bob Bowlsby as New Commissioner of the new look big 12.

Florida State University Board of Trustees Chairman claims FSU should seriously consider a move the BIG 12. FSU Football coach Jimbo Fisher “If that [jumping to the Big 12] is what’s best for Florida State, then that’s what we need to do.”

Clemson as a possible BIG 12 member to partner with fellow AAC member FSU. Also Louisville, GT, and even a little mention of ND as members of the new look big 12.

Chuck Neinas announces the new Big 12/SEC champions bowl game to be played between the champions of the two conferences.

I know Chuck Neinas didn't single handedly do all this but the big 12 was within an inch of its life. Its amazing how quickly and efficiently the BIG 12 has become a thriving organization again. The old Big 8 commissioner from 1971 came back and kicked some realignment butt.

    Thank You Chuck Neinas...

Or does it show how inept of a commissioner Dan Beebe was?

True- I was thinking the exact same thing... I just thought Chuck deserved his own thread after dan beebe nearly ditched the conference with his leadership.

Why exactly can Chuck not be our commissioner? Was this his choice or a stipulation?

He calmed the storm somewhat and that helped ISU greatly.

I thought it had more to do with that he wanted to stay semi-retired or retired. I think he is pushing 80.

We at ISU owe Chuck Neinas a huge debt of gratitude. I shutter to think where we would be as a school and a conference if that dip **** Beebe was still in charge.

Yikes, he actually mentioned us like that? I know it wasn't negative, but he put us in with two institutions that are most likely not feeling too good about their situation right now. Why was it necessary to mention Big East teams at that time? What about Kansas, or Baylor? Probably would have been better and more relevant.

Neinas stabilized us, yes...but I think I agree with the previous post on questioning how much of that was just from getting rid of Beebe's ineptitude. Chucky said some odd things every once in a while, and we do owe him...but I wouldn't anoint him just yet.

NCAA basketball championship game this year and the other had the Heismann Trophy winner. Once ISU even gets close to one of those things, we will talk.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

I'm not sure if Dan Beebe could have set that bar any lower....but kudos to Chuck, regardless.

By the way that linked article is from September of last year. And the references to ISU and other schools are not direct quotes. Whatever schools he referred to as "they" were not specifically given.

I'm assuming you are taking the argument of relevancy during the time he was hired? That argument doesn't work for KU, as basketball wasn't in season, and we all know how important basketball was in this whole thing anyway. In the case of Baylor football, I may be able to buy that since they had RGIII, but we all know that one high profile player does not make up for years of nothing and a demography that is nothing special.

KU, K-State, Baylor, and Missouri were all in the same situation at that time. There was no reason to bring in the Big East teams into conversation. They are likely to be left out now...and one can't help but feel empathy for their situation, but it was not Neinas' place to include them in a conversation about the Big 12.
