    Sprint Cup Race 2014 Newton?!!!

I was listening to Rusty Wallace talk to Andy G on 1700am about 11:40 (give or take) and he (RW) said that it wont happen in 2013 but if it happens it will be in 2014, and that they are actively talking about this!!!!!!

    HOLY MOLY!!!!

    THIS WOULD BE HUGE!

WOW!! I am a huge NASCAR fan as well but this would really surprise me if it actually happened. I guess it would mean one of the snoozer 1.5 mile races would lose one weekend a year. I would guess either Kansas, Michigan, Chicago, Texas, and California I think? All those tracks are boring as hell. I know all the NASCAR guys that have been to Iowa love it, Newton better be ready to build some seats if they do come because dirt track racing is BIG in Iowa.

Re: Sprint Cup Race 2014 Newton?!!!

I have been to a few races at Newton and loved my experrince. I would be in full support and I would for sure attend Sprint Cup Races there. (I always have found Sprint Cup to be funny, like one of the circuits on Mario Kart.)

California is already down to 1 race, Kentucky finally got 1 this year from them. I dont think that RW would say something like this unless he thought it to be possible.

Ya 1 less 1.5mile would be awesome, more diversity in track types!

I don't care about NASCAR but have been to two races and really enjoyed watching the races live. Would be great to get a race in Newton.

Helton said two years ago there is no chance, if rusty is talking about it, you have to think it has changed. Would be huge

Re: Sprint Cup Race 2014 Newton?!!!

I have never really been optimistic about getting 1 for the very reasons that RW talked about in the interview and what happened with nashville (or was it kentucky, i cant remember) but this really woke me up and got me a (probably overly) excited.

You are right I totally forgot about Kentucky getting one. And I very much agree in more track diversity 1.5 milers flat out suck. I would love to see Rockingham get one back as well.

I dont mind them, but there are to many and they ALL (at least at one point) had 2 races a year, thats what sucks about them.

Ok if they all had 1 race a year I wouldn't be so annoyed with them. I would also have no issue if Nascar stopped the road race at Infenion.

I understand everyone's excitement but let's be real here. Rusty Wallace is part-owner of the speedway and he's been talking about this since before it opened. The fact that he's talking about it again doesn't mean much. It is just his pipe dream.

It's not going to happen unless 100,000 new seats magically appear. Until that happens, it'd be the equivalent of Iowa or ISU playing football at the UNI-Dome.

    uni dome comment that is.

partially true, except have you watched a sprint cup race this year??? The stands are horribly empty. They bring in 15k of extra seating for indy and the late NW race. They could pile another 30k to 40k seats around newton if they wanted to.

I also agree RW been talking about this since the beginning but RW never put a date on it!

Helton might be tired of seeing thousands of empty seats at the other venues they visit throughout the season. Not saying he has changed his stance, but there are tracks that are simply not keeping pace with others in terms of fan support.

Rusty may just be trying to pump up the energy and attention around the Nationwide races (not that he really needs to, though) by talking about a potential Sprint Cup race coming to town if excitement in this area remains high.

Re: Sprint Cup Race 2014 Newton?!!!

Iowa would have to have more interesting racing than another Charlotte/Texas/Las Vegas/Atlanta clone...

In any case, I don't see why not. NASCAR used to want to go for major markets with track locations and races (Los Angeles, Chicago, Kansas City, etc.), but these events are singular enough that people are willing to travel. A NASCAR race is a weekend event, not a casual fan for a few hours.

Hence, all for (a) more interesting tracks (which would help television) and (b) more rural locations meant to attract those kinds of crowds.

I miss Rockingham, and I miss the second Darlington race, too. Iowa would be a good addition to their Midwestern milieu.
