Then again, it might not. These studies are a joke, and seem to advise something different every time.

Drink coffee, live longer. Sounds like a plan.

The alcohol will shorten my life, coffee will prolong it. Sounds like a wash to me.

When I was a youngster, they said hard liquor, loose women and smokes would prolong your life, I'm not saying they were right, but I'm still here.

They really are a joke, and about the only reason they get published in journals is as a way for the institutions that fund them (AARP, NCI, etc.) to save face for wasting loads of money on a virtually useless study.

All this study demonstrates is that there is a positive relationship between the amount of coffee one drinks and how long they live. Big deal. It doesn't do anything to explore causal linkages (which they admit); it could be that coffee increases longevity, but it could just be that people who live longer tend to drink more coffee. There are probably millions of factors positively correlated with a long life, but that doesn't mean they are contributors to one.

Maybe there is something in coffee known to help fight certain diseases?

There very well could be...but this study doesn't even come close to answering that question. The relationship between coffee consumption and longevity could also be spurious; i.e., both are influenced by some 3rd "lurking" variable, like wealth (richer people tend to live longer and plausibly drink more coffee than poor people).

    Re: Drink coffee, live longer

coffee is a double edged sword. If you have a stressful job, the last thing you want to put into your system is a stimulant to raise your already high cortisol and make your already overworked adrenal glands work even harder. Not good. It also effects your hormonal profile and activates one part of your immune system while suppressing that other part creating an imbalance. So while coffee has good aspects it has negative stuff too. Like everything, moderation is the key.
