    Why Tulane left the SEC

I love learning about history, and sports history can be really interesting. I just read this article about why Tulane left the SEC. A good read if you're into that sort of thing...

A few tidbits that were interesting
-Pre 1950 Tulane was a constant national FB power, leading the SEC in attendance
-A common practice in the SEC used to be to sign as many players as you could. Some would have as many as 140 FB players in summer camp before some were cut. By the way, this was one of the major issues Georgia Tech had with the SEC and was a reason why they left the SEC. External factors forced Tulane to curb this practice and they couldn't compete with the depth of other SEC schools
-Tulane thought they could be the Notre Dame of the South (sound familiar BYU?)
-The New Orleans Saints, scandals, and constant coaching turmoil doomed the program
-In 1985 the football program was one vote away from being dropped altogether
-This is not in the article, but Tulane is now trying to build a new 30k seat FB stadium

Wasn't having well over 140 players a common practice nationwide (See: Nebraska) until the NCAA instituted limits?

I don't know...I just remember reading an article on why Georgia Tech left the SEC a while back and it said that was one of the major issues they had with the SEC was that they signed a ton of guys and then cut them in summer camp.
