Okay i gotta ask... Why can't Des Moines ever get one?
Not enough Hotels around Wells Fargo? Or just the population?

Maybe because MI, OH, KY, PA, and IN ALL have one. You could just call one half of the entire bracket the Rust Belt side.

Sure there are a lot of schools that are especially good at basketball there, but still.

    Re: 2013 Tourney Sites

Looks like the best we could do is Kansas City for 2nd and 3rd then Indianapolis for Sweet 16, elite 8.

Anything but Auburn Hills...don't want people to bring back up that elite 8 team.

Dayton, Auburn Hills, Philly, Kansas City and Lexington are all close enough to campus.

The city of Des Moines is in the process of adding hotels in DT in the hope of getting a 1st and 2nd round. A hotel is being built next to High Life and el Bait Shop right now.

Really, that is a hotel? I thought they were doing condos there!?!

    Re: 2013 Tourney Sites

Couple of notes I saw. First, doesn't Dayton host the official first round? Why are they hosting the second and third round as well?

Also, when was the last time Duke or UNC would have not had their first two games virtually at home? It seems like Charlotte or somewhere nearby always had those.

The hotels have to be full service - the Hampton Inn's being built don't have all the amenities required by the NCAA. In downtown right now, you have the Marriott, Embassy Suites, Savery, and Hotel Ft. DSM (a dump) that would be considered full service. Also, if you have to have 8 hotels, you have to come up with four more that meet the criteria.

It has nothing to do with WFA, it's all about hotels.

Fresno State plans on bidding for NCAA men's tourney site - Fresno St. Women - fresnobee.com

The pressing question for Fresno State in developing its bid could be whether the city has or will have enough full-service hotel space to accommodate eight teams along with administrators, bands, cheerleaders and fans.

The NCAA, which has selected host cities for next year and is expected to announce 2014 hosts next month, has hotel requirements that include a minimum number of suites, rooms and meeting spaces per team, and a full-service restaurant.

"Also, too, there was the opportunity for us here to get them all of their own hotels. That matters because you know coaches and you know players and you know fans being able to have your team in your colors and your hotels and properties, taking pride in that matters. Some places just don't have that luxury."

    Re: 2013 Tourney Sites

Took me a while to see this post.

Isn't it unusual not to have a first-weekend site at either Greensboro or Charlotte?

Seems like there's been a near-guarantee of Duke or UNC being a lock for an in-state placement almost annually.

Would the Holiday Inn north of 235 right by Mercy be considered "full-service?" They have the rotating restaurant on the top.

This wouldn't be bad at all. We would have a ton of fans at a KC game.
