    Anybody with Digital Cable?

With all the dish talk I was wondering if anybody has/had digital cable(mediacom) and wondered how it compared in price to a dish service once that intro price was up. We're getting ready to move and decided that we'd look into our options now that my wife is graduating. I'm just wondering how it compares with how many channels you get for your money and if you could just get one or two of the movie channels instead of 7 HBO's or Showtimes.

    Re: Anybody with Digital Cable?

We had mediacom for 1 year after we built our house in Ankeny. Our internet never worked correctly and we had to call about 12 time to beg them to come and look at it. It was never fixed and we changed to Directv and Qwest DSL. I am happy with their service and the bill is less with what we have now than with mediacom. We have more options now and pay less.

I do have to say that I miss the on demand features of mediacom, but the positives of our directv outweigh mediacom.

Just in case you didn't know... I'm a girl.

If you want HBO you have to get Starz and all of the HBO's at roughly $115/month. We just canceled HBO/Starz and bumped up our netflix package since Sopranos is over and the only other things we watched were Entourage and Flight of the Conchords and both of them are on hiatus...

    Re: Anybody with Digital Cable?

We're actually changing from Mediacom to DirectTV next Thursday.

Afer the initial pricing was over we paid $90/month for cable alone. That's before taxes. We have what they call the Family package and then digital cable. Then there are three TV hookups @ $10 each. With the internet we're paying $150+/month.

We went through Qwest bundle package. We'll be saving between $40-$50/month. We called MediaCom to tell them that we were switching. They were willing to give us a break. It was only for 6 months. We'd be back in the same situtation we're in now.

Plus, next year I'll get to see my Bills play w/ the NFL Sunday Ticket.

    Re: Anybody with Digital Cable?

We pay about $121 a month for Mediacom digital cable with HBO/Starzz, and that also includes cable internet. If you like to watch ISU basketball, you'll be able to watch almost every game without having to get ESPN Fullcourt, and if you like any other local sports the OnDemand is great. The team I coach won state in soccer last year, and we can still go watch the game with the on demand feature.

You won't need to get the ESPN Fullcourt if you have the local channels. Channel 5, ABC, has the majority of the games on CTN.

Ok so how does the dish work with more than one tv hookup? I know you need one reciever per tv but do you pay rent on those extra recievers or something of that nature?

And if it matters were moving to Waterloo I need to find a Perkins sized ISU flag for my front yard while were're at it.

I just got a deal where you get the initial DVR upgrade for free. The additional room hook ups are like $5/month. Still cheaper than what I'm paying now.

    Re: Anybody with Digital Cable?

Sunday Ticket is freaking expensive, but it's pretty sweet. They have an online thing now too, where you can watch it in your web browser.

I had digital cable several years ago, and IMO it's not even close between DirecTV and digital cable. Firstly, Mediacom's customer service is legendary, and not in the good way. It's absolutely abysmal.

Secondly, it's way more expensive than DirecTV or Dish. I have pretty much every channel outside of the Adult and ethnic (not English) channels, with 4 receivers and my bill hovers around 120/month. That same package on digital cable would be running at least 150, if they even offered the same channels.

Thirdly, the picture quality isn't (or at least wasn't) even in the same ballpark. They compress the heck out of their digital channels, and the artifacting is really really bad. The most popular channels are all analog still. DirecTV HD blows mediacom out of the water. Comparing the two isn't even valid.

The things that digital cable has going for it:

Local coverage is better. You get the mediacom connections channel, which you won't on DirecTV. The local access channels can be fun to watch too (God Bus is still one of the best shows ever made). Fox College Sports, which sometimes picks up a 'Clone game replay or something. I'm sure this will be coming to DirecTV and Dish before too long though.

    That's really about it.

Depending on where you are, cable internet is probably going to be WAY faster than DSL, though. You'll have to get your phone line qualified for DSL to find out for sure. Cable internet will probably be between 2-10 times faster. For most browsing you probably won't notice though. DSL is usually cheaper.

If you own the receiver, you pay a $5/month access fee. If you lease them (which is what most new customers do), you pay $5/month to lease the receiver and that includes the access fee. All receivers can receive all the programming for your package (unless it's a non-HD receiver and you're an HD subscriber obviously).

You can have as many receivers as you want, but if you get over 4 tuners (some receivers have 2 tuners, so it could be as few as two receivers), you'll need to get a multiswitch. If you're a new customer and have a requirement for a multiswitch (say you have 3 DVRs), they will do all this during the installation for free.

This was kind of what I was already thinking that one of those qwest bundles would be the way to go. Anybody with that bundle have the Choice extra with DVR that could tell me what that runs with the phone/tv/internet bundle?

I'm getting it hooked up next week. It'll be about $112/month w/ taxes. Still saving money.

One warning on the qwest bundle..... My bill is like $30 one month and then $200 the next. For some reason, they charge me for Diretv every other month (not a price break, it is a bill for 2 months worth).

I have the Qwest bundle, and that doesn't happen with my bill. I have, however, had other issues with my bill.
