    Anyone Scrap Metal?

Looking to do it this summer since I have no job lined up currently. Got a large Dodge Truck and it can hold a whole lot of stuff. I have no idea where to start however...

Well----First you score some Meth. Get hooked, and start scrappin. It seems to be the norm for this occupation in my neck of the woods. You will start to see what I when you go to the scrap yard and see the other scrappers. Find a post frame building crew/company and find out/ clean up their job sites.

Good luck. Most scrap around here is either gone or they won't give it away.

I'm not in Ames currently, and in my neck of the woods there is crap all the time. My only concern is separating the crap and how to take it to a place.

    Re: Anyone Scrap Metal?

problem with this is, and I dont know the prices currently, but the prices were so high last summer that everyone willing to part with junk took it in theirselves. I took in about 12 loads at $500 a load. The people that still have stuff are the crazies that think they will need it someday.

We have people stop in all the time and ask if they can clean up our stuff and were like ummmmm dont yyou think weve prob already done that?

Its like stopping and asking hey I saw that car sitting in your driveway for a few weeks and nobody has driven it, can I have it?

    Anyway good luck!!

No need to separate the crap; taking it isn't a problem - just use this transport device:

A few summers ago I was cutting rubber insulation off of copper wire to take it in and the knife slipped resulting in cutting the underside of my forearm pretty bad. I got a ton of stitches and a 4 inch scar. The thing is massive. Moral to the story: Be careful.

My brother and I scrapped last summer for a bit. Cleaned up the farm and hauled a bunch of stuff for the body shop in town. Made a good chunk of cash. If you know someone who has car frames or old engines pick those up. They are a worth a fair bit of money.

So scrapping metal was a net loss proposition for you, huh?

As long as you don't let the fire get ridiculously hot (over 1,980 degrees) and you don't have neighbors who will complain you can just burn the insulation off.

In the end I probably still came out on top. I was scrapping with my dad and we did quite a lot and it wasn't just the copper. Plus we did have a neighbor that probably would have complained.

Yeah, I did when I lived in the country but wouldn't now.

I live in the city out here in Ohio so I can't burn insulation.

But will places literally take anything?

In our present culture (at least around here), the above statement is translated as "Please come and arrest me"...
