    Verizon Wireless & Mexico

Figured I may get a response here as I would actually calling customer service, so here it goes:

The wife & I are taking a trip down to Mexico later this month and will be in Mexico for ~6 days. We both have Verizon phones under a family plan, shared minutes plus unlimited data along with message plans too. I know Verizon has the Nationwide plus Mexico plan, and I should be able to switch over right before we leave and then change back once we return to the U.S.

My only question is, what's the cost for about a weeks' worth of Nationwide plus Mexico (w/ data) and then does this affect anything with my current plan? I obviously want to keep my grandfathered unlimited data for $30/month.

If you change plans I'd be willing to bet this goes.

Maybe get a prepaid thing in Mexico. It's very possible that it would get cheaper rates for calling back here than you'd already have. Maybe not, but very possible.

Might check and see if Verizon actually has reception in Mexico.

I know that their coverage map includes Jamaica, but my phone doesn't register a single thing. Thankfully, I only brought it to be an alarm clock.

    Re: Verizon Wireless & Mexico

Based upon the responses thus far I'd say just forget about using my phone at all (hotel will have internet if needed) and just keep it along just for emergency situations...

I'm not worried about calling anyone, was mainly interested in data...

Best plan right there. International data can eat you alive in a hurry.

I am on the family plan and have unlimited texting and when we were down there two months ago, I texted while at the airport in Cancun and it was 50 cents extra for outgoing and 5 cents for an incoming txt.

Visit Las Cruces, New Mexico, instead. You'll feel like you are in Mexico in pretty much every way, but without international cell phone rates and without mass executions and beheadings. Keeps your money in the good ol' U.S. of A. as well.

That's the best answer. Six days without data?-no problem.

Just got back from Riviera Maya last week and this is true. Received a text from Verizon upon powering my phone up when we landed there with this information, as well as indicating that all calls would be 99 cents per minute.

The resort we stayed at had wired internet in all rooms, so I brought a cheap wireless router and plugged that in and just traded email with folks back home instead of calling. Was easy and then we just left the phones in the room so we could still "get away".
