    Ban College Football?

A piece from the WSJ, with a picture of lakesbison:

Buzz Bissinger: Why College Football Should Be Banned - WSJ.com

The guy argues that college football should be banned because it's a distraction from the academic missions of universities, and I guess he's probably right that it is a distraction from academics.

But I view football as a marketing tool for universities; a way to help draw students (and their money) to your school and keep them engaged (and donating) after they've left. And more money = more faculty, more grants, more research, more academics.

Has anyone ever seen any data on what kind of impact football has on enrollment? I wonder if schools see a spike in enrollment in the year or two following a BCS berth, especially schools that are not traditional powerhouses (Boise State?).

Being part of the Iowa State Basketball Association was a distraction from my time at Iowa State but I have my doubts he'd say cut out extra curriculars.

Exactly, it's a university, not a monastery. Students will find distractions, might as well be one that puts money in the universities' pockets.

Now, if he's arguing that it's a distraction to the actual instituion, that might be true. However, barring a Penn State level scandal, how much time are university presidents and administrators spending on athletics, much less actual professors/researchers? If it wasn't sports, they'd surely be spending that time on some other form of fundraising, and I doubt it would be as effective.

    Re: Ban College Football?

No reason to ban it but it would be helpful if there was an expenditure cap on the major sports. The amount of money raised and spent to compete in the BCS arms race is a bit crazy.

If you can't handle school work and going to football games than you have poor time management skills

Buzz is very involved in sports and wrote the book, "Friday Night Lights". I may not agree with everything he writes, but at the same time, it's hard to argue alot of his points.

    Re: Ban College Football?

There's probably some truth to that. Meaning, sports sometimes over shadows more important things.

But banning college football is the dumbest idea I've ever heard
