    If you are an employer who would you pick to hire?

    employer in the sciences

    A- Person who has worked in a lab for 4 years, working on various components of projects(aka lots of experience) but has a 2.5 gpa.

    or
    B- Person who has a 4.0 gpa overall with zero experience working in a lab.

    they both have to same major if that helps.

    I'd go with person A.... IMO work experience trumps over education. As long as they have a reputation for being a good worker from their former employer.

    Depends on the quality of work by person A. If they come with good, solid recommendations, then A. Otherwise, I'd go on my general impression of the two.

    I've only interviewed 6 times in the 18 years I've been out of college but I haven't once been asked my GPA. Hell I haven't even been asked why I was a marketing/management major and applying for IT jobs.

    Depends on what kind of experience person A obtained, and if they place they obtained the experience at is one of a positive reputation. This seems like a trap question where experience always trumps education, but that's not the case in many scenarios.

    Person A. All the GPA does is a weedout of qualified vs. not qualified for some professions, so if both make it past the initial screening and are equivalent interviews, it would be A.

    I've hired lots of engineers in my career and I am always leary of hiring anybody with over a 3.5 GPA. If they've got a 3.5 or higher they'd better have lots of balancing extra-curricular activities. Otherwise I always assume they're one of those anti-social, anti-team player types... the kind of guys I always hated back at school. I like hiring people in the 2.7 - 3.2 range that have some decent experiences besides in the classroom.

    Also, GPA really only matters for your first job out of school. After that it's all experience and how you perform and interview.

    With "Lots of experience" I'd probably go with A, assuming the job pays a salary of "X" amount no matter what. You always take the experience where you can.

    The key is "Lots" of experience though. If that is the case, it sounds like a bargain get for entry level pay.
