Fat and unhappy, 34 yr old Yoga/workout advice??

So, I have been an anthletic person my whole life, but as most people run into weither that be career committments, family commitments, or Kid commitments or just being too damn lazy, my physical activity has taken a crap.

Doctor says I should be around 190 llbs, but Im 230. Im 5"ll and am still fairly mobile, but I tire quickly and feel as if Im moving in slow motion sometimes. I need some HELP. No I dont wanna go pay for a trainor or any of that cockamamy commercialized ****. Anybody on her have any advice, I dont even know where to start. I need to lose 40 good llbs and preferrably so they stay off. My self confidence is shot and I feel like a whale and Im 34 yrs old, not too late to actually do something about it.

I know there is no secret pill and Im not afraid to work hard, its just been so long since i worked out regularly that Im just not sure where to start. So bottom line, I want to burn fat and gain muscle, not too much as getting big is not the idea. I want to lean down, yet be strong. Any advice besides the "smart *** ones" would be very helpful. I know I didnt want to do anything commercialized, but if somebody would recomment the Insanity workouts, then I would try it.

I also know that flexabilty also helps in all aspects of life so Im king of interested in starting a yoga class too. Anybody with any experience, or words of wisdom? Thanks again for any advice. Im just a fella trying to better myself to not only feel better about myself but to also make myself more appealing and lead a much healthier lifestyle. Thank you AGAIN!!!!!

Increased reps at lighter weights for the workouts... Eat right... Go to bed early... You know the drill

Calculate the calories you are currently consuming (free database websites help) and the amount you burn based on activity. Adjust exercise and eating habits accordingly.

Pilates has been good for my back, flexibility, toning, etc, you might give that a look as well.

I wanted to lose a few less pounds than yourself (more like 10) but I found working out was not the only option. I started working out more, but also starting paying more attentinon to how much I ate. I dropped about most of the weight I was looking to lose by just reducing how much I had for breakfast and lunch, and working out 3-4 times a week. Nothing crazy, seemed pretty simple. I have always been thin so maybe I am lucky, but limited how much you eat and what it is seems bo the most important key. Good luck

also if you have a smart phone, myfitnesspal is a nice app for tracking what you eat and calculating calories left after exercise.

Re: Fat and unhappy, 34 yr old Yoga/workout advice??

I usually attend 3 to 4 of the rec services yoga classes a week. It started just as a way to appease the wife, but I actually rather enjoy it. I wouldn't recommend trying to learn yourself as you can easily injure yourself and become discouraged.

If you're not a student or staff at ISU, most decent gyms have classes. I just stick with the basic fitness yoga classes.

There is also yoga pants, which are nice scenery.

I use CalorieCounter by FatSecret and it works really well. It's pretty simple. The barcode scanner actually works really well too unlike some I've tried.

Something I struggle with is portion control. I usually don't like to stop eating until I'm completely stuffed and I have to train myself to stop before I get to that point.

Also, I've heard that it helps if you eat 5 - 6 smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. Apparently the continued digestion helps your metabolism work throughout the day.

I would also drink lots of water. It makes you feel more full and will help with overeating of that's an issue for you

used my fitnesspal to shed 20 lbs earlier this year. Didn't use it on a smart phone, you can use it straight from the web as well.

I've started doing yoga classes, and I really like it. Great for flexibility, and I relax more and sleep better when I do it. Wish I would have started years ago.

If you're wanting to go to the gym a lot, having a consistent workout partner will keep you honest.

Pick up some exercise dvds from the library and burn some copies.

I could be the only person out there who hates yoga. Tried it for a few weeks and I'd rather get kicked in the nards than go through that again.

Contact a church, your neighbors, or an old age advocate.

Mow the lawns of people who can no longer do it themselves. Or donate time to a church or civic place that needs it.

Free or even paid cardio vascular - on your schedule.

You need a lifestyle change - not an expensive gym membership or fancy diet. Do some good while benefiting yourself. Don't overdo it or else you will quit - just do what you can and contribute.
