Did Mac & Company drop the ball on this one?

First off I wanted to make it clear that I am not here to beat a dead horse when it comes to McCarney and his staff at ISU, we have definitely had enough of that.

I recently read an article on Tyler Lorenzen, who is now the starting QB for UCONN and has lead them to a 6-1 record. This is the same Tyler Lorenzen that is from Eddyville IA and came to ISU as a QB. Mac and company turned him in to a scout team receiver. Lorenzen apparently didn't see a future playing wideout for us and went to a CA JUCO and posted some ungodly numbers, got a full ride to UCONN and is now posting some very solid stats there, 134.4 QB rating, 60.8 completion%, 1,389 passing yards, 8TD's, 3INT's in 7 games played. Just for fun, Meyer's stats for the year are as followed...107.4 QB rating, 60.6 completion%, 1,564 passing yards, 5TD's, 11INT's in 8 games.

My question is..........Do you think that Mac dropped the ball on this one? Coulda, woulda, shoulda ISU be/been more sucessful with Lorenzen as our QB? I know this is pointless and nothing but speculation, but what else do we have to do? We are 1-7!

I think Lorenzen has benefited from a little easier schedule.

Yes, this guy was a diehard cyclone, would run through a brick wall for the clones. We tried to turn him into a reciever which he never wanted to be. You should never let in-state guys go.

Re: Did Mac & Company drop the ball on this one?

This is only my second year as a Cyclone fan, so i can't comment on this specific scenario, but I can't imagine how hard it must be to assess talent and recruit at our level. If you are Florida, USC or Texas it would be easy - just take the best talent at whatever position you need -heck get 3 or 4 of them. At this level coaches and recuiters need to look beyond what is obvious and make oranges out of peaches - as Ray Lewis might say.

Re: Did Mac & Company drop the ball on this one?

They said during the game that he has had 9 relatives play sports at Iowa State... I have watched 2 of his games and I would MUCH rather have him under center than Meyer, the main reason being how well he throws on the run...

Re: Did Mac & Company drop the ball on this one?

I loved DMAC but I believe his biggest weakness was that he tagged people early and never changed his opinion of them. Brett Meyer is a perfect example of this. In my opinion he was ahnded the QB job before he earned it. Stevie Hicks eas another example. Both of these players know they weren't going to lose their jobs regardless of who else we brought in or how they played. I know that some of the players on the ISU team felt the same way. I know one player who commented "Brett Meyer can do wrong ever...even when he does" The same could be said for Stevie Hicks.

As far as UCONN playing a weaK schedule the last time I looked they were in the Big East and that' no cakewalk.

If Tyler was a true cyclone he would have stuck around and tried to earn his way into the starting job, however he was a primadonna and decided to leave. I said good riddance and I still do.

Could it be that he does not have what it takes to play reciever speed, agility, so they would have just left him as a scout reciever and there would have been no chance for him to see the field except special teams. Maybe he just wanted to play football and was not going to get the chance here so he moved on.

Re: Did Mac & Company drop the ball on this one?

Mac tried to get Tyler onto the field. He was tried at quarterback for a little bit, then I believe he moved to tight end, then finally ended up at receiver. You have to remember, Tyler was a walk on. It's pretty hard to say Mac dropped the ball on a walk on that he tried at other positions. Anybody trying to degrade him for taking his talents elsewhere should keep that in mind, also.

So what did Mac see in Meyer that made him the clear cut choice over Lorenzen???

Re: Did Mac & Company drop the ball on this one?

Just a though considering many of us feel Meyer never has really progressed as a QB from his fresheman year. Maybe Lorenzen would never have developed into the QB he is now if he stayed at ISU. It is quite possible the change in coaches allowed him to develop into the QB he is today.

It is hard to fault someone to transfer because they want to play a certain position.

What is really going to hurt is if Lorenzen starts getting on pre-season All-America and Heisman watch lists going into next year...

Maybe he just wanted to play football, and play the position he was best at, maybe Mac should not have tagged Meyer to be the starter for the next four years....eliminating any sort of competition or development.

Didn't he go JUCO for two years and develop before UCONN? I have a feeling that's where he really progressed at QB.

Yep. You are correct. He was not that good of a QB while at Iowa State.
