    High Trestle Trail intox

I heard from a Polk County Deputy yesterday that they are gearing up an officer to ride around on an ATV to bust people on the trail for Public Intoxication and urination. This might hamper sales at the bars along the way. "Thanks" to all the great bikers that have complained about people being drunk. This is in response to complaints, not the gov't just deciding to collect more fines.

Maybe its the families pushing double wide strollers without any sort of lights or reflective gear complaining when they almost get hit by cyclists' who can't see them?

Assuming they will just be on the Polk County portion than which would be from Ankeny to Sheldahl. Pretty much means you cant act like a drunk fool or pee on the side of the trail anymore. No biggie. There are more then enough bathrooms in Ankeny and Slater, and the Oasis is half way between the two.

Don't they have anything better they could be doing?

    Re: High Trestle Trail intox

I probably bike the trail every other weekend and I have never seen people that drunk. Not saying it never happens though.

I think the first step in the right direction was outlawing beer on the bridge. If people are that drunk then i'm all for this. Just can't understand how people can't hold using a restroom on that trail. You have a port a pot at the oasis. One in Slater at the park or the two bars. Then Madrid... You have plenty of opportunities.

I think a better idea might be having set hours when you can be on the trail. I know the bridge is lit up at night and it looks great, but most of your vandals and drunks are out there way after dark

Although I agree that bikers have no excuse for urination on the trail, there are a lot of runners out there. I know that when I was training for my marathon and had my 17-22 mile runs you would really hydrate prior to the run. A mile or two in you almost always have to stop. If you are well off the trail and not in view of anybody, what's the harm?

As for being sloshed on the ride during times when families are out walking is a bit over the top. Even on RAGBRAI I couldn't tell the drunks from others. If you are getting noticeably drunk, you probably shouldn't be riding a public trail. The deputy did say that if one can smell alcohol on your breath, you can receive a ticket for public intox. That seems a bit much.

The good thing about this is the ATV/Gator will have a stretcher on it for assisting accidents.

This is exactly why public intoxication is a terrible law. If I'm drunk but not causing any problems, who cares?

Funny how they put up signs that say no motorized vehicles and then they'll be using one.

Good point...if your out of site then what's the harm. I still think they need to set a 10 pm curfew or 11 pm to discourage some people at night.

Just hard to believe its that big of a deal. Heck we always carry beer on most rides, take empties with us and never had an issue with that.

You can receive a public intox ticket if you appear drunk.

Iowa Code Section 123.46(2): "A person shall not be intoxicated or simulate intoxication in a public place."

Its a really, really bad law and there's a reason its not enforced anywhere near as much as it could be.

I think that may actually worsen any problem they may currently have. Let some of the people who may have had a few ride later at night when there generally isn't as much other traffic rather than pushing them into an earlier timeframe when there is more traffic.

Besides, is this trail strictly for recreation or is it also for transportation? We don't close the roads down at 11pm.

Someone else brought up walkers who are on the trail after dark with no illumination. Everyone using the trail should make themselves visible after dark - reflective material at the very least. Of course bikers should all have lights.

Yes, because I'm sure it's going to be the homicide detectives tooling around looking for drunks. Thanks for sharing, though.

LOL, exactly. Not to mention that's a West Des Moines police case, and the murder actually happened in Dallas County.
