League moving to suspend/end the Pro Bowl

NFL moving to suspend Pro Bowl, sources say - ESPN

Can't say I'm all that broken up about it. The Pro Bowl is a joke, and has been as long as I can remember. The move to before the Super Bowl was just ridiculous as well. If players from the two best teams don't compete, how can the game have any integrity? I guess lots of players have pro bowl incentives written into their contracts, so I guess they still should probably name people to the roster, but let the game die.

I'm sure NFL execs look at the NBA and see All Star Weekend, and what an event it's become, and want the NFL to have something like it. But the fact is, that sort of all star game wouldn't work for the NFL, and frankly it doesn't need one.

Didn't the pro bowl still get crazy high ratings this year? I can't believe the NFL is willing to just leave that money on the table. I have to think we'll see some sort of skills challenge or flag football in it's place.

Not sad to see the game go, never really watched it anyways. Putting it before the Super Bowl was just about the dumbest idea ever though.

I have to think we'll see some sort of skills challenge or flag football in it's place.
This is what they should do 100%.

Wikipedia says attendance was just north of 48,000 this year.

Re: League moving to suspend/end the Pro Bowl

I don't think anyone is going to miss the Pro Bowl. It's pretty bad when players try to get out of playing in it.
I could see it being a real bonus back in the 70s when you got a free trip to Hawaii but these guys get paid so much they can go to Hawaii any time they want.

And yes, movnig it to the dead week before the Super Bowl was an act of sheer stupidity. All it did was give additional guys a Pro Bowl bonus because they were filling in for the players that could not play due to the fact they were playing in the Super Bowl.

Just name your "All Pro" team and leave it at that. They collect their bonuses from that.

The ratings actually fell significantly from last year to this year. It was still fairly highly rated, though.

NFL Pro Bowl TV ratings fall 8.1%

I think there were some fans but I think the players would also bring a lot of their family along too.

I wonder how many of the fans actually traveled for the game and were not hawaii residents

The All Pro team is different from the Pro Bowl. Far fewer players make it on the All Pro team. For the purposes of the incentives already written into contracts, you couldn't just substitute one for the other.

True because if people don't watch it on tv it is pretty meaningless too.

Yea, but low rated NFL anything still kicks the *** of basically anything else on TV these days. That's all I meant.

Re: League moving to suspend/end the Pro Bowl

The other pro leagues need an all star game because with the long season things just get stale, the NFL doesn't need that and would be perfectly fine without this game. Who honestly watches it? I can honestly say I've watched more minutes of WNBA basketball than the NFL Pro Bowl.....and I've never watched even an entire half of the WNBA.
