    Jamie Pollard's son

I get these updates from the care pages website about James which is Jamie Pollard's son that has cancer and I thought I would share the last update. And to once again just be amazed how well that family handles that situation. I know if it was my kid I probably would be a wreck and it would be easy to make that as an excuse for my duties in my life why I was lacking in other areas. But yet we never hear a bit of that from Jamie or his family. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Pollard's as they continue to fight this fight with James with everything they have.

"Since my last update, James continued to struggle. It just seemed like it was one thing after another: neutropenic fever (2 day hospital stay), another infection, and more problems with his stent. The antibiotic that he had to take for his infection gave him stomachaches and he wasn’t sleeping well. This obviously affected his energy level too. We couldn’t help but wonder when James would be back to his normal self.

He was due in for chemo this past Monday (16th), but last week when he looked so drained laying on the couch, I thought there is no way he is ready. I texted Dr. Woods and asked her to delay it and thankfully she agreed. She had seen him earlier that week in clinic and had already started thinking he would need more time to get his strength back.
Having this week off has been a HUGE blessing! James really perked up over the weekend and this week both Jamie and I knew we had our old James back. He’s no longer taking the antibiotic so his stomach and sleep issues have passed. He’s slowly eating more and he has his energy and personality back. I can’t tell you how happy it makes us to see him feeling better!
The other good news is he had labs and his PET/CT scan on Monday. His tumor marker was perfectly normal and his scans showed no new uptake. The tissue Dr. Kaufman ablated in January is completely gone. The part of the tumor that he could not get to still shows some tissue there and a tiny bit of activity but it is just something they will need to follow and keep an eye on. All in all, a very good report!
We will enjoy these next few days before James has to go back in on Monday (23rd) for his fourth cycle. I was starting to think about it last night with downright DREAD and then this morning when I sat down to read my daily devotional, guess what the title was? “Learn To Take Life As It Comes”. God couldn’t have spoken any louder to me :) And the scripture at the end said it best: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (MT 6:34)

So we will savor this weekend and not think about Monday until Monday. Hope all of you have a good weekend too!
    God’s blessings,
    Ellen"

No one should have to go through that, let alone a kid who isn't even a teenager yet.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Having gone through my youngest brother with Leukemia, I admire JP and will pray for his son and the Pollard family.

    Re: Jamie Pollard's son

It's truly amazing how that little guy has fought. Wasn't he born with the tumor half his body weight? Truly an amazing kid. BTW, if you feel so inclined there is a CureSearch walk for fighting childhood cancer this Saturday. It's one of the largest organizations for getting money raised for fighting these awful diseases. Nobody wants to even think about their kid getting sick, so raising money for this is very hard. Des Moines is always one of the largest walks and raises big money.

Here is the link to the walk, and you can donate even if you aren't walking. If you don't have a preference of a team, my little neighbor passed away two years ago, his team is "Darrin to Believe". 2012 Central Iowa CureSearch Walk - Home

I've seen Jamie on this walk in support of James.

If you see Jamie on this years walk, SoM, please pass along our best wishes.

When we talk about what a wonderful job (or lackluster job for a few posters) that Jamie has done, we often forget what kind of family challenges Jamie is facing while keeping the ISU AD ship afloat; truly and amazing job when placed in this context.

Extra prayers going out to the whole family...

In addition, when walking please remember, Quinn Boylston, the son of one of our cycling team members who lost his short battle with a very aggressive form of brain cancer. I can't bring myself to take off the black and orange Quinn's Quest wristband. I suppose I'll wear it until it falls apart.

My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the Pollard household.

It is simply amazing that Jamie does what he does for Iowa State with the magnitude of what he is dealing with on the homefront. His wife must also be one incredible person.
