    Huskers Slipping Away

A week ago, NU had a sterling class of recruits. The Journal Star is reporting a 5 star three 4 stars and a highly touted 3 star have decommitted or are taking visits. There are concerns about the rest. I don't know if we would be in line for any, but, the current situation in Nebraska is tragic. They're running out of time.

it’s not easy to keep recruits when you’re being asked if you’ll resign,

Callahan said. “That’s what hurts. That’s what’s disappointing when you’re right at the position you can get a top class of talent like that and then let it slip away, that’s really tough.”

It could not happen to a more deserving program. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

You mean hurting worse than it already is? This could be a pleasure cruise for us Cyclone fans...

I disagree, getting Osborne involved again will probably lead to the program's resurgence. Getting rid of all that was Nebraska is what lead to the current situation. I would have rather see Nebraska not bring Dr. Tom back it would have prolonged the agony.

    Re: Huskers Slipping Away

Have any of you heard anyone say they feel sorry for nebraska this year? I've heard a couple non-nebraskans say it, and I just cringe. Try living there with that fan base and media. Remember the drubbings NU put on ISU and the rest of the big 8/big 12 over the decades? My goodness, this was a long time coming. I thought 2002-04 was fun watching them struggle (by neb. standards), but this team is a joke! Maybe a lot of nebraskans are looking in the mirrors these days and wondering why they put their collective identity and feeling of self-worth in this world into a silly football team.

I find it rather amusing that when the ship hit the iceberg, NU goes running back to the past and put all their hopes on Osborne to lift the program back to when he was coaching. It's gone, people. The style of play, the mystique, the synergy, the athletes, the assistant coaches, it's in the past. Believe me, nebraskans don't like change, in anything. And running to the past to fix the future is dicey at best, but then again, it's all they know.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Right, three yards and a cloud of dust is going to have a lot of teams quivering in a corner. NU will never be the same as they were. Expectation for success in Nebraska doesn't align with the changing landscape of college football.

This reminds me of Iowa and their wrestling program. I seriously believe Iowa will have Dan Gable's sweats named assistant coach long after he has passed on.

    Re: Huskers Slipping Away

The recruits want answers now - their feet will walk if they do not fire Callahan now or say he is coming back. Tough dlilemna. They have Tom Osbourne wqorking the phonme lines ffor keeping recruits just like a Jerry lewis Telkathoin. What can Tom say? "Take a TO, Bill?

Bill continues to spout nonsense like some other coaches we know that he has been excellent in all areas and yet the team loses. Cm'n, Bill, you now have the worst Total Defense EVER in Nebraska history. Only 61 team and one back in the thirties are competing for the WORST. Their team defencse now is over a hundred pretty across all categories. Total defense yardage in last five games hads been over 500 yards per game. They showed they do not know how to tackle a qb let alone a running back.

"Again, all I would tell you is I have done an excellent job in every area," he said. "It's hard for the media to know. But what we've done off the field and what we did on the field, it's well-documented. We did some positive things. We haven't sustained it this year."

Looks like they play West Coast Defense.

Great advice for all fans - I get depressed when the Cyclone WBB lose, just not suicidal.

Let's not confuse coaches with obnoxious fans. I won't vilify Callahan. My wife went to one of his Football 101 programs - proceeds to breast cancer. He is, on a personal level, a decent guy - just not our guy.

The tragedy is that if the fans would have accepted this year - they had an awesome recruit class coming in and the young players will get better. Their demand for short term results is hurting their chance for long term benefit. The only thing that can save this program from a long term slide is for Osborn to confirm Callahan's return, now. That doesn't seem likely.

Nebraska has a highly touted OL from Iowa that I wish we could get our hands on.
