    Varner to London

I saw in the other thread the Varner is going to London and I know that poster knows a hell of lot more about than I do so I hope its true. How does this work? Did he not have to wrestle at all until the others sorted out who wrestled him? Looked a lot like Burroughs from NE who also is going?

    Re: Varner to London

Varner was a medalist at the 2011 World Championships, so he earned a bye into the Trials championship finals. The rest of the guys at his weight class wrestled for the chance to face Varner.

    Same thing with Burroughs.

So if Coleman Scott is in, he defeated Leiber, then the three slots today were all filled by previous BXII members?

The U.S. hasn't qualified 60kg for the Olympics yet. There are two more qualifying events (one in China next week and one in Finland in May), and Shawn Bunch skipped OTT in order to try to earn the U.S. a spot. If he does, then there will be some sort of three-man competition between Scott (2012 OTT Champ), Bunch and Reece Humphrey (2011 WTT champ) for the Olympic nod.

Ah, so that would explain why Trent Paulson was in the finals today but got third.

    Re: Varner to London

Trent and Travis Paulsen wrestled fantastic this weekend. We can be very proud of how our Cyclone Senior wrestlers competed.

Especially proud of Travis, he recently moved up to 84 Kg and had a great plan on how to win and almost pulled it out.

I know all of our guys had bigger goals in mind, but battled against some tough competition and I am proud they are Cyclones.

    Re: Varner to London

Also talked to Jake Varner after making the Olympic team, he is still a Cyclone, just need to go train where he thought he had the best shot to make the Olympics and that was with Cael. I can't fault him for that.

He was at the Cyclone hotel during Nationals hanging out with Simonsons and other Cyclones.

    Good Luck Jake in London!!!

I think if he wasnt still a Clone, he woulda left when Cael left. That to me says hes a Clone for life. I can't fault him for training with Cael either, he has to do what he feels best for himself.

    Re: Varner to London

Yeah, we really need to get behind Jake. Keep in mind also that things like coaching changes the athletes have no control over and are potentially to their detriment.

Like others have said, I was really proud of the Cyclones representation and effort. Though no doubt it was disappointing for everyone but Jake (and Harry Lester, who was only at ISU for one year but left specifically to focus on Greco).

I hope Trent and Travis give serious consideration to competing at least one more year. With their performances they put themselves in a good position to do so.

I get a sick feeling when I see photos of Gable. I get a sick feeling when I see Cael in the PSU corner. I got the same sick feeling when I saw the photo of Varner in a Blue/White singlet and his arms raised in victory.

That's just the way it is.

We haven't had the best overall team in many years, haven't won the nationals and that is troubling. We have individual champions and it bothers me that these champions go elsewhere and win multiple national championships as coaches.

I hope Varner will return to Ames and be part of a national championship team soon.

You do realize he was wearing blue because it's part of the rules for international wrestling, right? One guy wears red, the other wears blue based on their line on the bracket.

Here he is after his first win over Rowlands in the best-of-three finals:

Correct, the blue had nothing to do with Penn State colors
