    Morgan vs Mcdermott??

For those of you in "the know", do you think Mcdermott is a better coach overall after seeing him for one year? Morgan games were exciting.

That would be a good fight, but McDermott's got the size, i'd pick him.

    Re: Morgan vs Mcdermott??

McDermott hasn't really proven much at ISU, so there's no call to be made there. McDermott has always been an above average coach, but not an excellent coach.

    Re: Morgan vs Mcdermott??

I definately think McDermott is a better coach, if for no other reason than he recruits quality people, not just quality players. Dont get me wrong, he recruited some prety good guys (rahshon for example), but he brought his share of low-lifes with him. He definately brought some hope to the program in his first couple of years because his recruits were very exciting players, but they failed to improve as a team from year to year.

I really don't think it's even a contest. Wayne was a nice guy, and I think a very good recruiter, but as far as a bench coach, and all around, McDermott has been the best coach in the state for several years.

I couldn't bring my school age children to watch Wayne's teams......the lack of discipline was embarrassing. It's no contest...McDermott's sharp.

Are you kidding me? Did you ever see a game Wayne coached? Even during time outs, he would sit in his chair with the look of "God, is this game over yet?"

McD is up, cards in hand of plays/layouts, commanding how the game is being run

    Re: Morgan vs Mcdermott??

McDermott hands down. I didn't think Wayne's last year as coach was that exciting of basketball to be honest and the sparce crowds for the last few games of the season I think said something too. I had never seen Hilton so empty and quiet and I think everyone kind of knew that a change was coming because JP was not going to let the Hilton atmosphere deteriorate any more.

Wayne recruited some nice talent but he couldn't coach them and his strategies were flawed. I liked seeing fast breaks and fancy plays but we lacked fundamentals and our 2-3 defense was a complete joke. Guys were lazy on defense and I have never seen so many wide open 3's and easy layups given to a team when playing a zone. We got out-rebounded a lot because of that as well because we were never in a position to box out well. We relied so much on fast breaks and creating turnovers that when we went up against teams that valued the basketball more than we did we got killed. We had no half court offense and teams that could move the ball could easily break our trap zone.

I think the long term future of the program is in much better hands now with coach Mac. He'll recruit players that will work hard and fit into his system and also have good character. You can't argue with his past results at UNI as he did a great job there and he now has more resources so it's only a matter of time till we are back in the NCAA tourney I think.

Morgan's games were exciting when he had Jared Homan. I didn't think we were very exciting when we were losing to EA Sports.

Plus the fact Morgan still does not have a job says a lot about his coaching abilities as well.

Really? If Morgan was any good, he would still be our coach.

    Re: Morgan vs Mcdermott??

Yeah, Morgan lucked into the ISU job. No one wanted to touch the post-Larry environment, so we went with someone who wasn't that good as HC at Long Beach St. We made the best out of it for a couple of years and thankfully moved on.

    Re: Morgan vs Mcdermott??

Who has more NCAA tourney victories in their careers? Who has the better record head to head?

Seriously though, I love McDermott and I feel lucky he's coaching my favorite team but let's not consider him Roy Williams yet and Morgan a load of crap. Wayne did a nice job here for the better part of 3 years and put us in position to hire a young, up and coming coach like Greg. To be fair, Wayne never had enough time to truly build his own program in just three years. When his team had a cabable big man (homan, vroman) his system was very effective. He brought in Jiri and a national top 60 player in Taggart to help that. Unfortunitely, both weren't ready to play the roles they were thrown into because of inexperience and a serious illness with Taggart. You guys can trash Taggart all you want, but he has potential. I'll be keeping an eye on him the next 3 years out of curiousity.

I appreciate what Wayne brought to the table and if Pollard was going to pull the trigger and fire him, he atleast brought in a guy who on paper looks like a great hire. Taking UNI to three straight NCAA tourneys is something I doubt happens again in my lifetime and I'm not old.

Just my opinion, I know it's popular to dislike Morgan but I don't. It's kinda like the McCarney argument, there's definitely two completly different sides to it and that's fine.
