Would you take 6-6 today (plus bowl) or gamble for 7-5 or better?

Travis and Tim the other day asked this question on their radio show and seemed to get mixed answers. I wondered what others thought. I would take the gamble, I think if we can get any consistency from the quarterback position, this team could finish in the top half of the Big 12 with the defense we will have this season. Starting 3-0 is certainly a 50/50 shot. Baylor, KSU, and OU all come to Ames and I think we can take down two of the three. KU and TTU should be wins. And I can see us stealing Texas or TCU on the road. I mean our quarterback situation is better than this time last year and so is our defense, so I am taking the gamble.

I would take the gamble. We have a good defense, strong running game, as favorable schedule as we're getting out of the Big 12, and a down Iowa squad.

I just see too many "if" games, I would take 6-6 and a bowl game. I won't be shocked if we win 7, but also not if we only won 5. Anything outside of those 3 records and this site will be going crazy, for one of two very different reasons.

Stupid question. 6-6 is mediocre. Another opportunity to possibly finish with a 7-5 record SHOULD be an automatic goal.

Gamble, no hesitation. 6-6 and a smaller bowl has been great for getting the program back on it's feet the last couple years, but at some point you need to take the next step. Danny Mac was in the same position and couldn't get that next step taken (at least not consistently), I feel like CPR can get it done. The defense is good enough to do it, the offense needs to catch up.

If I were guaranteed another "signature" win with 6-6 I would take it. If not, I would take the gamble. Programs aren't just built on wins -- they need to carry some weight.

I agree dumb question. The gamble. I wouldn't want any fan to strive for 6-6 and some low level bowl year in and year out.

Re: Would you take 6-6 today (plus bowl) or gamble for 7-5 or better?

I'd gamble on 7-5 or better. If the talent level is better every year so far in the CPR era, then eventually that has to translate to more wins. Now's as good a year as any to make the leap. If we can lean on the defense and running game, our QB play only has to be decent.

"Gamble" all the way. 6-6 likely means finishing towards the bottom of the conference again. ISU needs to get out of that position.

Our schedule could easily have 7 ranked teams on it.

    6-6 + bowl for sure

Did I miss something? What's the gamble we're taking by going 7-5?

You gotta take the "gamble" option. We've already proven that Paul can win 6 games. Now it's time to take it up a notch.

Until the B12 expands to 12+, our schedule will always be extremely difficult, so we can't expect to wait for scheduling relief to win more than .500

You are either guaranteed 6-6 or you take the gamble. With gamble we could go 7-5 or better or end up 5-7 and no bowl.
