Twins Fans...Scott Baker has Tommy John Surgery

No link to an article yet. Just a couple of tweets from Twins beat writers. Surprising. So he is out for a this year and at least part of next.

Hopefully it won't be much of next year. Recovery time varies a lot, but a couple recent pitchers come to mind who were back in just a little over a year (Joe Nathan and Stephen Strasburg).

doesnt make a whole lot of difference for Twins fans, he was already expected to miss the season and I wouldnt think they would excercise his 2013 option. TJ surgery makes turning down that option a no brainer.
Really too bad, I kinda liked Baker.

Isn't this like the 3rd or 4th pitcher from the Twins that have needed TJ surgery in recent years?

2nd this year, in addition to Zumaya (though he was later released). Joe Nathan was out for 2010, and Liriano was out for 2007, but I can't think of anyone else...

That's what I thought. TJ surgery is never a good thing, but with technology now a days people can bounce back. Nice win on the Yanks last night, but I like you guys better in last place.

I have a bad feeling that Glen Perkins might be next:

Have they had the same pitching coach during all these guys? If so, wow.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

This is what I was thinking. Time to fire that guy.

Yes, it's been Rick Anderson for a long time, and yes, I can't wait until he's canned (not for the injuries, but because I can't stand his "pitch to contact" philosophy).

That's how Bob Maclure was for us last year. He got canned and now we have a guy that is the exact opposite. Worked against the Angels but for some reason not against the A's and Indians. Back to the bottom for us.

Aren’t they like 3-8 this year anyway? Minnesota just can’t get a break, their division this year is tough.

I don't disagree with wanting the guy fired, but I am not sure it is just his philosophy. I think Gardy and Ryan have a lot to do with that too. In fact, it may go all the way back to Kelley.

Blackburn is having problems too. He and Perkins are both headed to the DL. Liriano looked great in ST, then the season starts........time for a change of some sort. Their pitching prospects never seem to develop.

You're right, it's more than just Anderson. One of the reasons Gardy's so adamant about good defense is because it's absolutely essential for "pitching to contact" to work. Their whole defensive strategy is to get the ball in play and let the defense do the rest.

Bill Smith was always rolling the dice with the pitching staff, hoping that someone would rise above mediocrity and evolve into a ace. Baker, Blackburn, Slowey, Perkins, Bonser, Liriano, Duensing, etc...none of them ever panned out the way he hoped.

With the farm system so depleted and so much salary money tied up terrible contracts, I'm resigned to the fact that Terry Ryan will slowly sell off pieces of the team over the next few seasons, re-stock the farm, and go for another slow build. If everyone's trade value weren't at an all-time low from an awful 2011, I'd want them to blow the team up right now, but they'd have a hard time shopping guys who haven't played a full healthy season since 2009.
