    Play both QBs in 2012

Jantz has the better big pass play ability and escape-ability in passing plays.

Barnett has the better zone read ability.

Play to each QB's strengths - when needing to run to win, Barnett gets most or all of QB time. When needing to pass, Jantz.

Both get a short leash for turnovers and maybe that helps keep them both from trying to do too much or getting too amped up.

If Jantz was close to Barnett's ability at the zone read, he'd be clear favorite.

Barnett wins on slow and steady if he cuts out mental mistakes/turnovers.

I don't know if it is reasonable to expect either one to dramatically improve in 4 months before the season starts on their weaknesses, so play both to their strengths. I think this is likely to be the outcome for 2012.

I can kind of see your point.

I recently thought of it this way. If Jantz does not improve enough to beat out JB, then start JB. However, if we get down and JB is not able to move the offense throught the air, put in the relief pitcher. We know Jantz has big play ability and he might give us a better chance to come from behind, especially late.

However, if it goes the other way and Jantz starts, it wouldn't work as well. If Jantz spots the other team 17 points off turnovers it is too late to go with JB to try and methodically work our way down the field.

Re: Play both QBs in 2012

Unfortunately, playing both consistently would probably hurt the confidence of both players. Even pulling one for the other too often would do that.

Players usually need to build up a rhythm. If JB is the starter and isn't doing as well to start the game it is tough to pull him early without giving him the time to get into a rhythm.

I would only advocate pulling the starter if they are obvioulsy doing horribly and they have not improved at all despite having some time to get into rhythm.

Great Idea. And play Jeff Woody as QB on those 2nd and Goal type of plays.

Re: Play both QBs in 2012

Not sure why people are bashing this post. I think we'd be better off with Jantz being the main guy, and Barnett being the 2nd guy, but still. We're going to need both this year. Steele was injured last year, Barnett stumbled off the field a couple of times, and I think Barnett's accuracy would sometimes get a little worse by the end of the game, due to the hits he was taking. Playing two QBs allows us to call QB runs, a huge part of our offense without worrying as much about an injury.

Playing 2 QBs also forces defenses to prepare for them both (even though they are similar players). Once defenses got an idea of Barnett's skill set last year, things became more difficult for him. Defenses were shutting down his scrambles up the middle and he didn't adjust so well.

I hoping that Steele starts, but I think Barnett could be a decent complement.

prefer 1 QB, and that is Barnett. Steele barely beat UNI and Uconn, the Iowa game was a gift from god himself. The real Jantz showed up in conference play and ISU got blasted. Barnett is not going to set any passing records, but he is going to keep ISU moving the ball and the clock.

Rhythm in football is overrated. Nothing about only being on the field for half of the game for largely unpredictable periods of times says it's a game of rhythm to me. Rhythm comes into play once you get 1 or 2 first downs, and then it doesn't matter if you started the last drive or not. If I went back and checked the numbers, I'm confident our first drives of games were much more successful on average than the rest.

Pulling Barnett like they did in the bowl was probably not the way to go about, but I think you can play both QBs and keep them confident by having a more specific plan about how to use the 2 QBs and making them both aware of what's expected of them.

Both are so close and have different strengths that offer distinct advantages I am saying they both play again in 2012.

Instead of looking at what's wrong, I see what is right with this approach and feel it outweighs real and perceived negatives to this approach.

It's difficult to have a true leader in the huddle if you have two guys calling the shots... IMO.

Re: Play both QBs in 2012

It will be like last year - A starter will be named but both will eventually play and probably start.

All that stuff about leaders and hasn't worked...Rhoads said it worked to get to a bowl game last year and the team can adjust to two leaders.

Leadership isn't what you mean, what you mean is a clearly superior QB player.

ISU has two that are very very close in QB play.

Without a clear superstar QB it is tougher to win, but not impossible.

Rest of it is really meaningless tired old yada yada yada.

The REAL Jantz in conference play? You mean the INJURED Jantz?? It was obvious to anyone who know QB's that his plant foot wasn't right and being dinged caused a lot of errant throws and he lost trust in himself to run out of the pocket because of it. A healthy Jantz is our best option right now. Barnett can game manage and zone read better but is no threat down the field and teams will realize this and put 8 and 9 in the box on him. Jantz will make the safeties play way back which will allow for a lot more holes to run/pass into.
