Cyclone FB: Top 40 WR All Time

The whole process wasn't necessarily fun, but along with MookinLincoln (@mookjnsn) we each compiled our own top 40 lists ranking the best wide receivers in school history.

    Debate away!

Geeking out on Iowa State Football and Basketball - current and past: Cyclone Top 40: Wide Receivers

Future positions to come, I am sure.

Great list...but that is a fairly underwhelming group.

That is a very depressing list. Darius Darks at 30 is probably right, which is very sad.

There's some high quality at the top (6 All-Americans), but yes it does drop off rather quickly

Darks i have one very impressive season. Unfortunately, the remainder of his career was dissapointing.

This list just brings back pain. I remember Davis, Darks, and Montgomery more for their drops than for any good plays they made. Flynn was a momentary bright spot, until I saw his 3 TDs and remembered that he would've had 4 if he wasn't completely screwed out of one against Nebraska.

Blythe's TD totals have to make him first. .7 TDs/Game is a crazy number.

A lot of overhyped players on that list.

Hamilton, one of my "favorite" players is one of those overhyped. So much potential there.

I love RJ Sumrall, but the fact that he's in the top 20 in our history says a lot about the talent/production we've had from the WR position.

IMO, even Todd Blythe underproduced here (ducks). Plateaued way too early.

Blythe was a beast. 31 TD's in 43 Games. That is rediculous.

Yep. The other 4 guys that made up the top 5 COMBINED to have 38 TD's in their career.

Yeah, how dare he get injured and not produce as much in his final seasons. What a jerk!

I blame the offensive philosophies at ISU at the time for some of the drop off as well. Meyer threw it up to Blythe some, but since he was by far the best target, the other team always knew where he was. If we had a better offensive scheme or better complimentary receivers I think he would have had a lot more produciton.

I agree with the selection of Doran. Almost 75 yards per game for a career in the late 40's early 50's was stellar. Per Kirk he was top 4 in the nation both years. That's some serious cache!

He was literally a Pro Bowl talent.

Blythe and Danielson too high ......... Harris too low but that's my list not yours. I was wondering where my favorite receiver was - Keith Krepfle but forgot he was a TE given all the passes he seemed to pull in. Not many on the list did anything in the NFL.

Re: Cyclone FB: Top 40 WR All Time

One might want to consider goal line strategy while falling over yourself on Blythe's TD numbers.

For example, the leading rusher for ISU in 3 of the 4 years that Blythe played was Stevie Hicks ... in 2003, Hicks had 0 TDs and in his senior year of 2007 he had 2 ... 2003 is the only year since World War II that the leading rusher at ISU failed to score a single touchdown.

In my opinion, Blythe accumulated a lot a short TD catches that simply weren't an option in decades past.

That said, his numbers are impressive nonetheless.
