    Shaggy is under the bus.....

I'm a big fan of Chizik and I truely think he will take us places we have never been. BUT! I'm a little concerned about how he is handling the Shaggy situation, at least in the press anyway.

I believe in field goal kicking a majority of the battle is a mental one. It seems to me that if we have no one else to step up to the plate in field goal kicking, Chizik needs to build up Shaggy's ego, not destroy it. After all, this kicker is the kicker that got us our ONLY win this season so far and appears to be the only guy that can win a game for us.

I'm just as frustrated with Shaggy's inconsistant kicking as the next guy and have to admit that I fight every urge to look away when he is kicking but I have a feeling he maybe our only shot at winning a game the rest of the season since our offense has a hard time finding the endzone.

It is what it is, Chizik has stated that he will recruit in all aspect of kicking which is great but we're stuck with Shaggy for this season. Throwing him under the bus now is not going to help an already bad situation.

Why can't Mahoski kick? He was supposed to be pretty good.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

I don't think that he's telling us anything that we don't already know. Obviously there is nobody better on the team. Plus, if we're going for it on 4th and 1 a few different times then Chizik really doesn't have to say anything. His actions speak loud enough.

I heard this on KXNO so take it with a grain of salt. Shaggy is apparently lights out in practice. Like kicking at the next level...that kind of lights out. But he just can't get it done on the field.

I guess we can just hope that Chizik has felt the situation out, and is trying to light a fire under his butt.

Obviously recruiting a new kicker doesn't impact Shaggy in the least. So I think those statements are a little more of a shot across the bow of the current crop of kickers already on the team, that aren't performing or competing for the job. Heck, Shag is under .500 in kicks right, and none of these guys can improve on that??

I think this is pretty well said. Besides, this is college, and you have a military son for a coach. He's not going to baby the players to make them feel better after making more than one mistake.

This problem with Bret has far exceeded a mental game. When the inconsistancy reaches beyond more than two football seasons, its not mental anymore, its PHYSICAL! Sure you can let it go a few times, but after awhile you just move on. Take Sandvig not returning puts anymore. He gave him a few shots, but failed and moved on.

Bret seems to be a good kid and I wish him well in his career after ISU whatever that may be. However, he is not a D-1 kicker nor should he have been in a position as a walk on to be the #1 guy. Yes, his problems are of the mental variety but do you honestly think it would make him less apt to miss a clutch kick of Gene was patting him on the back? Gene wasn't throwing him under the bus, only stating the obvious that our kicking game flat out stinks in all aspects. There are enough good kickers in this state that it should not be a problem in the future.

Mahoski tore a ligament in his non kicking leg playing soccer before he ever arrived on campus. Don't know if that is still affecting him.

Not pat him on the back, I do think he needs to get on him about his performance ....one on one. But to air it out in the media does nothing to help the situation but make it worse.

The biggest concern for me is when Chizik asked a member of the press during a press conference if he could kick....

Re: Shaggy is under the bus.....

We don't need to coddle players. How about Shaggy just put a rest to all the talk and make some field goals then no one will be talking about this? I think we've coddled Meyer too much in the past as well and just accepted that he'll make some costly mistakes regularly then will just use his stats as a way to look past it. These players need to step up and take some accountability once in awhile. I know Shaggy is not scared to face the media when he misses and I like that but I'm sure he'd much rather face them after some big makes.

    EXACTLY!!!!!

I could care less what his mental game is at this point....i could care less if we even tried a field goal again....i'm sick and tired of our offense busting their butts against very good teams only to have the same individual come in and miss it....Chizik came in here with a mentality that everyone has to earn their spot, their playing time....well imo they've given him enough shots to right his wrongs....were not talking about 50 yarders here.....every cyclone fan watching or listening to a game for the last 3 years knows when the field goal unit comes in, everyone closes their eyes....NOT ACCEPTABLE....i can handle losing, i can handle mistakes......heck i can even handle being blown out to a better team....but to keep living on the fact that well maybe he will make this one ......forget it........i'm through cheering for his 35% accuracy....And by the way, for anyone to say he won the game against Iowa, let us not forget the defensive and offensive units that put him in a position to kick those 29 yard field goals.....

Recruit a kicker for gods sake and allow us to cheer for 75% accuracy!!!

Here's an idea. Score a touchdown. Then all of this is a mute point. How many times have we stalled in the Red Zone?

THANK YOU!!! This is the most obvious thing we could do. We are a terrible offense once we get around the 30 yard line.

Well, he tried the touchy feely method on Shaggy for a while and he's still underperforming, so now he is laying it on the line. I'm sorry if it hurts Shaggy's feelings, but it isn't undeserved. That said, the offense is letting us down MUCH more than the FG kicker, IMO.

That is great, but if he does not have the stones to do it on saturdays who cares. Sit him down on the bench and let him watch someone else give it a shot.
