    West Virginia Spring Game

For you that are interested, we will have our spring game next Saturday April 21st. It will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Go Cyclones when they aren't playing the Mountaineers. Contemplating a carpool with the Barnetts for the game in Ames. Should be a lot of lively conversation in our vehicle from Texas to Ames.

How good is WVU suppose to be this year? Did they lose a lot from last years team?

WV will be feeling the grind of a Big 12 schedule when they arrive in Ames for the Nov 24th game. All clones in this game.

Geno Smith is the real deal. Looking forward to the first of many ISU-WVU conference showdowns.

    Re: West Virginia Spring Game

9 of the offensive starters are back and that includes all the skill players. I believe they have 6 defensive starters back. The concern will be the defense. Pretty much all new coaches. We will play an aggressive modified 3-4. You will see a lot of gambling and aggression.
Geno Smith may be the best QB in the Big 12 and has 2 potential All American receivers.
Most preseason polls have them about 11 in the preseason standings. the 70-33 beating they put on Clemson helped a little bit. HC Holgerson took over as HC in July last year and really needed more time to put in his offense. He has a year behind him now and his own hand picked staff. I would be surprised if they don't do well this year.

Thanks for the heads up. Interesting to see how a guy like geno will perform at his spring.game compared to the struggles of jantz and jared.

    Re: West Virginia Spring Game

My Grandson and Son went for the official visit at WVU during the start of spring practice. They were really impressed with Geno with his accurate and effortless throwing motion. He has a great awareness of every body around him. Josh has visited and watched Okie State, OU, TCU, TT, and SMU. Geno is as good or better than any he has seen.

Above is the rating of the Big 12 QBs in their mind. I don't completely agree with it. I personally believe Nick Florence-Baylor, JW Walsh-Okie State, and Jared Barnett will surprise some folks this year. You can be a pretty good QB, but if you don't have the support from your team mates and the right system, you are pretty much dead.

    Re: West Virginia Spring Game

RichRod pilfered most of WVs defensive coaches to U of A including Jeff Casteel the DC. I'm curious papaw, you mentioned that WV was going to be playing a modified 3-4. So does this mean that they've scrapped Casteel's 3-3-5 completely? From your comments I'm assuming so but I'm curious how feel about it as well as whoever your new DC is.

Geno Smith will have those Mountaineers contending for a B12 Championship and a BCS game, not to mention keeping that little bronze statue in the B12 for another year.

    Not sure if serious.
Potential Heisman candidate at QB for WVU going against the likes of Jantz and Barnett? HUGE advantage WVU...

    Re: West Virginia Spring Game

Well Casteel and the 3 3 5 defense are gone. After checking it is probably a good thing. Joe DeForrest came in from Okie State after 11yrs at OSU. He is assistant HC and co DC. Joe coached more kickers and punters who had great success than any that I know. Matt Fodge-Ray Guy winner, Dan Bailey-Lou Groza winner, and Quinn Sharpe presently come to mind. He knows the importance of a great deep snapper and holder. One of the first things he did was to scholarship one of the best deep snappers in the nation. A great snapper can make a decent punter and kicker great. Joe will also have the LB.
Co DC is Keith Patterson. 26 years a coach, last at Pitt and was interim HC before going to WVU. He is very intense on the field and getting a lot of aggressiveness on the field.
D line coach is Erik Slaughter from Stephen F Austin. His SFA team led the nation in sacks[FCS] last year with 48 in 11 games. In his 3 yrs there he coached 3 players that are in the NFL now and 7 All Conference players. He is a master of coaching up the talent that he has.
I think Holgerson has done an excellent job choosing his staff and am real enthused about next football season.
We really won't know until this fall will we?

Well if I know anything it's to never count Iowa State out of any game (as proven by the Okie Lite game this year).

    Re: West Virginia Spring Game

WV may have the best offense in the conference this year. They may have a slip up playing better competition week in and week out but I don't see how they aren't contenders for the big 12 crown. TCU will be very good as well but I think they will be impacted by the big 12 grind. I'm glad we have a coach with a couple years under his belt, I wouldn't want to be in rebuilding mode in the new look big 12.

    Re: West Virginia Spring Game

west virginia and tcu will improve the big 12 conference. we did not lose much when the two traitors mizzou and texas a and m left the conference... i think the conference will be tougher with the addition of west virginia and tcu...both have had good football teams in the past years...
