Without reading your article (yet) first thing that comes to my mind is forcing more turnovers.

after reading it, the best news IMO is we have a lot of young talent and depth developing on the D line.

More pressure on QB = more sacks & turnovers

Re: 2011 Defense, Where to Improve

Nice work as usual khaal...1 thing that is somewhat refreshing is our pass defense. Considering what our schedule looks like next year, we will need a good pass defense to compete in the Big 12 again. Despite the departures of RG3, Weeden and Tannehill, if you look at some of the QBs that we will face next year (Geno Smith, Landry Jones, Doege, Cryst etc), I think you can make a case that the Big 12 will be even more pass oriented.

If we can run the ball effectively and slow down the pass attack of most of these teams, we could find a way to get 8+ wins on the schedule.

A much improved DLine improves every other aspect of the defense by pushing the offense out of rythmn.

Re: 2011 Defense, Where to Improve

Great work as always Kirk. Even losing LJ and Benton, I think the defense will be slightly improved from last year, due to A) more depth at CB and on the D Line and B) offensive improvement, which means the defense won't be on the field as long.

Also, dude! Do your taxes! It's April 11th already

Re: 2011 Defense, Where to Improve

Well, turnovers are a byproduct of the area that needs to be improved.

The Taxes are in process...sometimes they just take longer than I'd like.

Thanks for the comments guys. Is there a similar area of analysis that you'd like to see for the offense from last year?

    Try this:

Geeking out on Iowa State Football and Basketball - current and past: Only Way to Go

And, according to my records, yes.

Baylor had 67 attempts for 395 yards and Missouri had 58 for 294.

    Thanks for the comments.

Yep- Link works and I also double checked the stats and your 125 attempts are correct. Holy cow thats a lot. I guess when the D gives you no reason to stop running it might as well continue to shove it down their throat.

Re: 2011 Defense, Where to Improve

    Thanks guys.

It is also a function of the Big 12 playing so much "faster" than every other conference. I did a column for WRNL on it last fall. The production is roughly the same for the Big 12 as the other leagues but Big 12 teams get off so many more snaps because so many of the offenses play much of games at an up-tempo pace.

Re: 2011 Defense, Where to Improve

Yikes those Offensive stats are hard to look at. The one glimmer of success is the Rush yds/att and even that is still bottom half of the B12 and NCAA. This makes the defensive stats and W/L record that much more impressive. Some how the boys still found a way to win enough to play in NYC.

One can only hope that this is the year where those stats get better. I know we have a new OC and the same QB(s) but here is to hope that maturation of players and simplification of the playbook lead to progress and not more of the same.

I really think the simplified playbook and a more concerted focus on the run game will help.
