Gene Chizik: Kicking game will be addressed on the recruiting trail

For those with CloneZone access, around minute 22 of his weekly press conference, Gene was asked if the kicking game was going to be addressed with recruits since there is no second option right now. Gene responded that every facet of the kicking game must improve and that his staff will take care of it on the recruiting trail.

As usual, Chizik answered in his typical "No nonsense, no doubt about" way. This is very REFRESHING to hear.

Re: Gene Chizik: Kicking game will be addressed on the recuriting trail

I think he's very annoyed at our kickers. He sounded displeased with them on his call in show last Monday and Saturday after the game he was basically speechless as to why Culbertson can't make a FG.

Having a good kicker is very important IMO. Look at Colorado with Mason Crosby or Iowa with Nate Kaeding. Once you cross the 35 yard line you know that at worst you will have 3 points on the board. That would be refreshing.

who isnt? im not going to call them out on the FGs because im just way to understanding when it comes to that i guess...but kickoffs are ridiculous. we have resorted to kicking it along the ground now because at least then it can bounce to within the 20.

I think they might be doing that to help the coverage team. It would be nice to be able to get it past the 15 though.

well yes obviously they are doing it to help the coverage team. my point is that we HAVE to do it to help the coverage team. because option #1, kicking it inside the 5 in the air, or should we even say *gasp* the goalline, isnt an option at all with the kicking crew we have.

Well all facets of kicking is a stretch, I think Brantner has done a great job with the punting. At times he's been our MVP I think as he seems to pin the other team back deep quite often.

Actually, Chizik specifically said that our deep punting game must improve as well. Brandtner is too inconsistent in my opinion and I think Chizik agrees.

Brandtner has unleashed a few head-scratchers this year for sure.

I have yet to figure out why Culbertson took over kick-off duties...
And Brandtner can put 'em back deep, but not consisently...

If you can't kick the ball to the endzone with a 15-20mph breeze in your favor something isn't right. That ball needs to be out of the endzone. Worst case no closer than the 5-10 yard line. Kickoffs alone can win you football games. I think we are fine with our punter.

Does Yelk still have a year of eligibility? I'm pretty sure he we can get him a medical red shirt.

I think Brandtner has gotten a little worse this year. I thought he kicked ***** last year.

Because Griebahn can't kick the ball in bounds. But just kicking it out of bounds is probably better than a pooch kick to the 30.

Re: Gene Chizik: Kicking game will be addressed on the recruiting trail

Honestly I wouldn't mind if the staff signed 2 kickers this year, and let the best man win. It's ridiculous how long we've gone without actively recruiting a kicker. And for the love of god let's get a guy that can put it in the endzone - field position has been a battle we've been losing all year.

Another reason why we have a new coach. The last one just didn't think he could waste a scholarship on a top flight kicker. It's nice to hear GC thinks otherwise.
