    Coach candidates at Nebraska

On the Husker message board, a usually reliable source says the current candidates for the new coach are:
    1) Bo Pellini, LSU allready talked to
    2)Jim Leavitt USF
    3) Gary Patterson TCU

I am sure Leavitt would NOT be interested in leaving Florida, And Patterson would be out of his league, not THAT good of a coach!!
    The search begins.

    Re: Coach candidates at Nebraska

They don't stand a chance of getting Leavitt. If any of them saw the Outside the Lines report on him this morning, they would know this for a fact. And you're right about Patterson.

I don't know enough about Pelini to opine on his effectiveness as a coach.

Yeah, I am doubtful about Leavitt. He has the next big thing down there, in the right place, at the right time. TCU is falling off here lately, so they might be able to lure him over.

I've also head that the following are considering resurrecting Big Red:

    Bear Bryant
    Bo Schembechler
Woody Hayes (At least his players knew how to throw a punch)

I mean cmon its kNU we're talking about here, how could these guys not jump at the chance to resurrect both themselves and the Sea of "We used to be good, and if you're not Tom Osborne, you aren't allowed into our pathetic state"

However, the leading candidate currently is:
    Lou Holtz

After watching his inspirational speeches both Osborne and the players believe Lou will lead them to a Championship

Leavitt is set up as you say, especially with Miami down and FSU not being what they were 10 years ago. USF has all the hype and momentum in Florida.

Why would Pellini leave his comfortable job being one of the SEC's best for cornfields and scrutiny?

    Re: Coach candidates at Nebraska

Turner Gill had a few problems with Tom Osborn.. He was usually late for practice and liked to leave early. His rep. at Buffalo is that he doesn't work enough hours or hard enough, even tho he HAS made great improvements in there record.

Urban Meyer was also suggested as a Wish, like HE would really want into THAT mess!!!

"I'm not going to lie," NU defensive lineman Zach Potter said. "I tried harder when he was out there. Because he's coach Osborne. It's sweet."

    What a crock

I may not think too highly of Callahan, but what a crappy position to be in

    Re: Coach candidates at Nebraska

I just learned this and don't know if it's been posted yet, but I found it interesting. Bo Pelini has already been the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He served as interim head coach for one game, the Alamo Bowl the year they fired Solich.

Question is, will he want to come back? He'd be a hell of a pickup.

    Re: Coach candidates at Nebraska

Does anyone else see this turning into their LAST coaching search, which ended with them getting Callahan as their ~6th choice?

Nebraska has to be one of the worst jobs in the nation right now. You have a fan base who expects way more than you can reasonably deliver. You have a very tough conference, and it's not getting any easier. If ISU can drag itself out of the gutter, at the moment there are NO creampuffs in your division, and only one (arguably) in the whole conference. You've got the same recruiting problems that ISU, Iowa, Kansas State etc. all have, save that you've got a bit of tradition that those programs don't (and you aren't battling another D-1 school in the state for recruits). You're going to be stuck with players (for a few years) that may not fit your system.

I think Nebraska fans are looking for Nebraska of old, but they should be pretty content with a 9 win team, really, because outside of a miracle year, they probably aren't going to see much better than that. Heck, I almost have more optimism for our program than their's at the moment. Had we beaten UNI, Kent State and Toledo (which is certainly not outside the realm of possibility), we would have the same record, against arguably the same competition (They have beaten us, Wake Forrest, Nevada and Ball State).

Aside from Pellini - a fan favorite, that list seems a little light in the "name" category.

Nebraska is stil Nebraska - a traditional program. Not sure the Husker-faithful will take well to a head coach from "lesser" programs like USF or TCU. Little like iowa in that regard.

Now, that being said, when you fire a 10 win coach like Solich you deserve all the misery coming your way. I hope this search falls flat on it's face.

I also have to wonder, how appealing would it be to come to NU as a new head coach and have Tom Osborne constantly peeking over your shoulder? Not sure I'd be up for that.
