Allegiant Air to charge for Carry On's!

Allegiant to Charge Passengers for Using Bin Space | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weather | Local News

$35 to carry on a bag that needs to be stowed in a overheard compartment, that is crazy. I imagine that means no more courtesy checking of bags if you have a carry on too.

Not surprised by this but I hope this doesn't become a trend in other Airlines.

Getting worse and worse. I go to vegas a couple of times a year and even before this announcement, I decided that allegiant just wasn't worth it even with the direct flight. They nickel and dime you for everything, their web site is horrible, and they've become pretty expensive.

It's Allegiant. If they could find a way to charge passengers for their pocket lint, they would. Doesn't make them a bad airline. They actually have a nice niche in the market, and aren't bad to fly at all. You just know that you're going to pay for everything, when you fly them.

I am not sure I mind this, I hate people trying to cram suitcases into the overheads. Just check those things so we can all be as comfortable as possible.

OK, so now you are supposed to travel without any bags, makes sense.

I'm not sure this will stop this. "here, here's $100, I want three spaces to fit my trunk.

I was on a trip just befor 911, in line, behind a guy who had a giant boom box sitting on top of one of those bedside trunks. Thing was probably 3x2 feet. He then proceeded to argue with the flight attendant about checking it. He didn't understand why it wasn't carry on. There's no dollar amount that corrects stupid unfortunately.

This. I've seen people try to carry on items of ridiculous size, and then get mad when the flight attendants tell them that they won't fit.

But if luggage is marketed as an appropriate carry-on size in the store, why should somebody have to check it?

Re: Allegiant Air to charge for Carry On's!

This makes a lot of sense to me. People try and get around the baggage fee by taking it on-board, which inconveniences everyone else on the plane. I can't even fit my purse in the overhead bins most of the time. If you bring bags on a plane, and there is a fee for baggage, it should be incurred no matter where the bag is. (Ideally there'd be no baggage fee, but I digress.)

Just because the luggage manufacturer has marked something as "appropriate carry-on size" doesn't mean that it actually is. There's no standard for something like that. It depends on the type of plane. If you end up flying regional airlines with any frequency at all, you'll quickly find out that what fits easily in one overhead bin, is far too large to fit in another.

I fly like once a year and have only ever done Allegiant once, so not a huge deal to me. Still think its bogus for those that fly a lot.

No such thing. "Carry-on size" is much different with a little regional jet vs. a 747.
