    Insurance problem...

So my wife signed up for health insurance through her company and asked them to take her payment out of her check weekly. Well turns out they haven't been doing that and now we owe quite a chunk of change. I'm guessing that since we didn't catch it on the pay stub that we will be held responsible, but I was hoping, wishing, someone will tell me a way to make the company responsible.

I don't think there is much you can do. I might try to see if they will let you pay it off over future paychecks instead of a lump sum.

Have you used the insurance during that time? If not, then I would just change your effective date.

    Re: Insurance problem...

My company required a blood test to get a 'discount' on the premium. Sounds like a surcharge to me. Even with diagnosed needle phobia they demanded I give the blood or pay more.

....coming to a company insurance plan by you shortly

    Re: Insurance problem...

You are screwed! They will figure some way to work with you to make smaller payments instead of a lumpsum however. The issue is... even though you have not been getting charged the company has still being paying their part of the coverage and there is no way the carrier is going to just give it back. You knew that you singed up for the insurance and it was your responsibility to make sure you were paying for it. I know it sucks but that is what you will hear. Sorry

Not to lecture you (Trice says, as he starts to lecture you...), but you didn't look at pay stubs and notice this yourself?

If you're not doing that, you should. I posted about this awhile back but my wife's company screwed up her W-2s, which would have cost us a lot of money on our taxes. I never would have caught it if I didn't pay attention to pay stubs.

not to be that guy, but didn't you notice when you got her paychecks that they were a lot bigger than they should be?

They should be able to spread the withholdings over the remaining pay periods (weeks or months). Have her talk to someone in payroll/accounting.

If you didn't lose it out of the check, you didn't really lose any money, but hopefully they will work with you a bit on catching up.

    Re: Insurance problem...

When I was on maternity leave (and used short-term disability), they didn't deduct for benefits. I had to pay it all back when I got back - I had the choice to do it all at once, or over a few paychecks. Like others have said, talk to accounting.

Seems like a bunch of crap to me. They should be able to start charging you today and start your insurance today.
