    Gimme more TE

I was excited to hear some encouraging reports at this position. In my opinion, the TE was extremely underutilized last season. There are few plays (of the more routine variety) that excite me more than a TE catching a 10-yard pass on a seam route and rumbling straight upfield, head lowered for another 5+. Hoping Mess has plans to throw to the big guys more often.

It's hard to use them when they aren't there and last year they weren't. Hopefully Brun can change that.

Well, Arnaud's TE was the best receiver he had, by a mile. He didn't have much of a choice. By the same token, SJ and JB didn't have much to go with there. Hammerschmidt's a nice blocker but not much of a downfield threat.

I'm pretty pumped to see Brun in action this year. He can add that dimension we didn't have last year.

AA also used catlett really well. what i meant was that AA knew the importance of the TE and our QBs now dont seem to.

    Re: Gimme more TE

For the most part the TE isn't used much different than all our other WR's, Franklin was the perfect fit.

one thing i will miss from Reynolds and Darks is their blocking ability on the outside and down the field. hope the younger guys can do this as well

Don't disagree with anything you say here, but I don't believe that any of those factors justify the drop in utilization that we witnessed from 2010 to 2011. Hammerschmidt only had 13 receptions last season. Throw Branderhorst in there, and they had 23 total between the two of them. Compare that to Franklin's 54 receptions in 2010.

Clearly, some of that is due to talent differential from year-to-year, both at the TE and WR positions. But I have a hard time believing it wasn't also due to choice- perhaps a progression/evolution of Herman's system. Hell, Hammerschmidt only had 8 more receptions in 2011, without Franklin in front of him, than he had in 2010.

I could be all wet, but I think we have some untapped TE production to take advantage of.

Don't disagree. I think Brun is a big part of that though.

I guess I'm just saying I don't have much regret regarding our TE utilization in 2011. I think it can/should increase big time next year.

Agreed with this. I almost think we should have used them less. They were terrible at pass catching.

In the last 3 seasons, we had one year where we didn't have a potential NFL prospect lined up at TE...mystery solved.

Catlett also signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a while. He was slow for a pass-catching TE, but he wasn't without talent.

    Re: Gimme more TE

A great TE is a weapon unlike any other. Very difficult to cover and potent in run blocking. ... Thus why they are difficult come by.

Excited to see what brun brings to the table
