    Tremendous Defensive Effort

Even though we lost the game today, our defensive effort was awesome. We had such a size disadvantage and we were still able to make great plays on the field. Jesse Smith is going to be a real special player for the team at LB the next couple of years. He was making play after play, even with a bad ankle.

Offense was fairly effective in the game against a tough D. Meyer, with the exception of the int, was pretty good. Marquis Hamilton showed me that we will be doing okay at WR w/o Blythe.

    What are your guys' thoughts?

I think that if I was a defensive player I'd be a little ****** at the offense. Three trips to the red zone with no points...

Amen to that. Inept. It's the only way to describe our offense - INEPT.

Given the challenge our D had today (a top 5 opponent and a bottom 5 offense), the guys played outstanding.

A true case of that game being close - not because of our offense, but in spite of it.

    Re: Tremendous Defensive Effort

I thought Meyer played really well. Too bad he threw that INT, but it's tough in the redzone when you can't run the ball and are forced to throw in such a confined area. I thought we got conservative on offense at times, especially on third down but atleast we kept turnovers and bad plays down.

After being disgraced last week, the defense was unbelievable. Bradford missed on a few sure TD passes, but for the most part you couldn't ask for better play out of this defense.

I thought he playedmuch better than he has for quite a while. The two things that I would love to see is less locking onto a reciever and get his passes a little higher. He must have had 6 passed batted down today with a couple of those 20 yards from him.

I can't disagree with the locking on thing, but I think Meyer throws most of his passes wayyyy to high, there were a number of throws to the slot where Hamilton or Sumrall had to jump up and grab it, costing them another 4 or 5 yards. But maybe OU's dline is just freakishly tall along with being damn huge

Or low. How many of those bubble screens or 5 yard outs - one hopped to the receiver?

He's definitely improved in his recognition of a play going south, and getting rid of the ball.

Meyer played well in terms of managing the game. Until the very end, he didn't make mistakes. He's definitely not a "win it for us" QB as much as a "don't lose it for us".

I really noticed that our D seemed to play with a lot more fire this week than at all this season. Guys were hustling, finishing tackles, hitting guys. I loved to see our D really step it up this weekend.

That was one of the best defensive efforts I have seen from ISU in a while. Whoever is calling our plays is a MORON, and Brett Meyer needs to grow a pair. But a GREAT defensive effort. BTW, why did we recruit Blythe if we are only going to give him 1 red zone shot in 5 red zone possessions?

I'm wondering if this is a direct result of last weeks game. Everything seemed to float out there last week and it gave Texas' Dbacks plenty of time to close on the ball. He definitely seemed to have more zip on the ball this week. I wonder if he was overcompensating this week.

    Re: Tremendous Defensive Effort

DEFENSE PLAYED LIKE CHAMPIONS TODAY! They don't deserve the crappy effort they are getting from the offense...I understand it's OU's defense, but our offense was PATHETIC when it came down to needing a big play and getting in the red zone. The defense should be damn proud of what they did today!

    Re: Tremendous Defensive Effort

The defense I saw today was outstanding. A complete night and day difference between today's D and the D at every other game. Those guys on the D line were completely screwed by the offense today, be it shaggys duffed kick, a red zone pick, or any of the other offense blunders, the D deserved better effort from them on the big plays.

I agree, although I don't think "being screwed by the offense" has been limited to just this game.

If I'm not mistaken, aside from the Toledo game our high point output this season is 17.

    17!!!!!!!

That includes Kent State, UNI and a pretty poor defensive NU team.

    Re: Tremendous Defensive Effort

Only two points better than 2003 team.

If you can't score, what good are you say the guys.

If you count the four touchdowns that offense gave away in 7 games, you could say we average 12 points a game.

We won the time possession battle again.

We probably average 80 plays a game and 12 real points when you consider turnovers. Must lead the nation in fewest points per play.
